From the Principal’s Desk

Last term, I mentioned the importance of taking time to relax and recharge as the holidays approached. At the time, we were looking ahead to a long year. Now, however, we’ve passed the halfway mark, and that well-earned break is more important than ever.

The challenges get more substantial as expectations rise and the preparation for life after the Campus for our Year 12s is very close and very real. The countdown is on, with just 10 weeks of work and assessments before it comes to an end. Year 11s from both mainstream at Kardinya and Fremantle Fast Track face a different set of challenges in determining their final path into 2026. For students who are close transitioning from the Intensive English Centre, considerations need to be made as to what pathways are appropriate and within reach based upon academic strength and potential. Many students are focused on progressing to TAFE or entering the workforce, and we recognise that all pathways—whatever form they take—are valuable and worthwhile. As a Campus, we measure our success by the diverse achievements of our students and the meaningful outcomes they pursue.

As a Campus that focuses on the whole student/young person, we always note the progress and development of that whole young adult. We are witnessing the stages of development daily and it is the reason for many of us to be in education. I couldn’t be more pleased by the positive culture we are all enjoying with our young people as this year unfolds.

Events Term 2

In amongst a very heavy influenza season and the resurfacing of COVID, both of which affected attendance for staff and students, there has been much happening.

In the thick of this has been the contribution of staff to the organisation of Harmony and NAIDOC Week celebrations in week 10. Concerts, Indigenous education and recognition and of course acknowledgement of the diverse cultures represented across the campus in dress, food and actual harmony. My thanks to all staff and students who have embraced these events.

On June 27 at the East Fremantle Sailing Club, the Campus Ball was resurrected after an absence of four years. The work behind the scenes to make this event happen is thanks to Colleen Steineck and the Student Council Ball Committee. More than 150 students, staff and guests attended what was a memorable and successful evening. Students presented themselves stunningly and the mature behaviour was exemplary. I suggest this event won’t be missed again and will be a highlight in future years.

Student Achievement and Recognition

The end of Semester 1 is always marked by the issuing of reports and on June 26, and our parents and carers were invited to attend interviews to discuss the progress of students both at the main campus and at Fremantle Fast Track. Reports are an important “moment in time” assessment of progress but are only one part of the communication and feedback to students, parents and carers. Consistent contact between students and teachers and home occurs throughout the semesters and is integral in informing and guiding students towards their post campus destination. The afternoon was again well attended and the two-way feedback received indicated success in the provision of timely and meaningful information. My thanks to all staff for their professionalism and parents and carers for their attendance.

On another note, and certainly a point of recognition, we congratulate Isabella Galvao who has been selected to represent Western Australia at the Australian 10-19 years Diving Championships in Brisbane commencing July 26. We wish her all the best for a wonderful outcome.

Campus Council Vacancy

At the beginning of every year, we ask for nominations for positions on the Campus Council and we manage to attract keen parents, carers and community members. Unfortunately, Patrick Moore, a new member in 2025, has had to withdraw due to a change in work circumstances. We thank Patrick for his valued input and wish him well in his new position. This now leaves us with a vacancy and I ask that if anyone is interested to please contact me via email at Gary.Anderson@education.wa.edu.au and I will provide the full details of this important but not too onerous role.

Students do have a lovely break, and we’ll see you back again for Term 3 on July 21.
