Year 3

Hello families and friends!

It is Week 6 and we are over half way through term 3 and we have been having fun in year 3 with our learning!

Reading and Writing

For the term we have been doing an Author study on famous Australian author and illustrator Graeme Base.

We have been reading a new book weekly and doing reading and writing activities that align with his magical storytelling. For example, we read his award winning book Animalia which is a book using alliterations, so students crated their own alliterations.

To continue with our Graeme Base theme, you would have seen the grade 3 teachers dress up as a character from his books for the Book Week parade and each class has created a display outside of their classrooms dedicated to one of his books.

Mathematics

For non number we have been looking at 3D shapes, we have been using hands on materials and play shapes to discover the vertices, edges and faces. The students have also created paper models of 3D shapes to further develop their understanding.

We are proud of all our students' efforts, positive mindsets and look forward to acknowledging and celebrating their accomplishments with them throughout these units.

Year 4

Happy book week! The year 4 students have been having a great time preparing for book week! During the week the students attended ‘Maybe A Miracle” Incursion in celebration of book week. We also held our annual book week parade where students were able to dress up as their favorite character! A shared reading session was also held throughout the week, pairing up with a year 8 class and completing a reading activity together!

Throughout reading and writing, students have been exploring an author study. Margaret Wild is an Australian author who has won many awards for her picture stories. The students have been able to read a wide variety of books, focusing on her writing style and gaining inspiration into their own writing. Students have also been taking advantage of the sunshine across the weeks, completing their daily independent reading outside in the yard!

During Maths, student have been building on their knowledge in the areas of 3D shapes, symmetry, fractions and angles! Students have been completing many different hands on activities to build on their mathematical knowledge. Students have been drawing symmetrical shapes and drawings and demonstrating the line of symmetry, they have been creating symmetrical origami and many more fun learning activities!

In humanities students have been learning about life from other’s perspectives such as those living with disabilities. Students have been exploring the different types of disabilities and how these impact their lives. Students have also been exploring ways the community can help people such as using brail, speaking in Auslan, ramps instead of stairs and many other helpful initiatives that can ensure people living with disabilities are being treated as equal. Students have begun watching the movie ‘Wonder’ which will further their knowledge in the area of their learning.

In science students have been exploring biological science, specifically looking at native plants such as the gum tree. This week students were able to conduct an experiment where they planted eucalyptus tree seeds in soil and are caring for the plants to see how/ when they begin their germination stage.

Year 5

In Writing, the students have just wrapped up their author’s study unit on David Walliams by creating an engaging narrative using their author’s craft. Students created their narrative with a focus on using different types of figurative language to engage the reader.

For the rest of the term, students will be learning about different styles of poetry with a focus on rhythm and rhyming.

In Maths, students have been continuing to learn about fractions. We have learnt how to add, subtract and even multiply and divide fractions. We have just started to learn about the relationship between fractions and decimals. Coinciding with our fractions and decimals unit, students have been learning how transformation can be applied to shapes. Students have learnt how to translate (slide), rotate (turn) and reflect (flip) shapes.

In Science, students recently went to Scienceworks for an excursion. Students partook in an interactive presentation looking at different kinds of energy including sound, light and electricity. Students also spent time in the Airplay exhibition investigating the way airflow affects different objects.

Year 6

So far this term has been super fun!

In reading we have just finished reading Once by Morris Gleitzman, our teachers told us we would love it and we really did! We can recommend it if you like historical fiction. Lucky for us, we are going to be reading the next instalment in our classes, I can’t wait to see what the main character, Felix, gets up to! Our new unit in reading will be poetry. We will be learning about the structure and purpose of these whilst learning about the themes and messages in them.

In writing, we have just finished our Horrible Historical Fiction stories. Our teachers are really proud of our hard work and we are proud of ourselves too. We can’t wait to share our stories with our families at home, a few of us are even watching Horrible Histories at home as our love of history has been sparked!

In maths we have been enjoying learning about cartesian planes, today we even got to play battleships with partners, this helped us get used to the 4 quadrants and plotting positive and negative integers. We have also been working on fractions and decimals which has been challenging but we’re looking forward to extending ourselves by learning about percentages too next week.

We are looking forward to so many upcoming things like the Father's Day stall, Interschool Sports, Footy colours day, RU OK? Day and so much more. It’s almost getting hard to keep up!
