Volunteers Needed for School Holidays
All dates available 25/9- 6/10
If you would like to volunteer to do chicken duty for the upcoming school holidays between Wednesday 25th September to Sunday 6th October please let me know. You will only need to pop up to visit the chickens once a day for 3 or 4 days to check their water and food. It’s really easy and the kids love it! Duty families get to keep all the yummy eggs they collect. An information sheet will be provided with all the details prior to your duty. If you would like to put your name on the roster please email Mel at mkerwin@sjmitcham.catholic.edu.au with your preferred dates. First in, first choice of dates!
Egg Lotto
For your chance to win 1 dozen eggs just buy an egg lotto ticket. Tickets are only $1 each! The next Egg Lotto draw will be Monday 16th September.
We usually sell tickets in front of the school on Wednesday afternoons from 3:10-3:20pm, selling tickets to students, parents, grandparents and carers. If not, tickets are available to buy at any time, just bring your money into school and the Environment Leaders will help you out.
All the money we make is put back into buying food and other necessities for our chickens. There will be a few dozen eggs available to win so get your winning $1 raffle ticket soon!
News from the Garden - Spring is here!
While you’re buying your egg lotto tickets on Wednesday, don’t forget to buy some of our wonderful St John’s Worm Juice!
Worm Juice is the name our students have given to the liquid we collect from the worm farms which is organic liquid fertiliser. It is packed full of nutrients that gives your garden a much needed boost. Your fruit, vegetables and flowers will all appreciate a special treat of St John’s Worm Juice especially at this time of the year.
Just ask Jenny or Maria in the office how much their gardens love Worm Juice! Only $2 for 2 litres, instructions are provided.
Please ask for it if it’s not on display.
Soft Plastic Reduction Initiative
Each day the Future Leaders are keeping a tally of how many wrapper free lunch boxes are in their classrooms. At the end of every 2 weeks we work out which classes have the highest percentages of wrapper free lunch boxes and the winners will be announced at assembly. The two winning classes will receive one of the Environment Mascots to keep in their room for 2 weeks and they will also receive 15 class Dojo points!
The winners for weeks 6-7 are…
Prep and 1/2B
The Prep class have been maintaining their totals of wrapper free lunchboxes at around 50% with 1/2B only just behind on 49%. However this round during weeks 6 and 7 there were two other classes also close behind with totals of 45.5% and 42%. All classes have shown improvement on previous weeks so keep up the great work!

Message in a Bottle Competition
Kids are asked to share their recycling message for the Message in a Bottle installation at Scienceworks! Submissions close 20 September. We are inviting Victorian primary school students to contribute to our Scienceworks installation that celebrates the success of the program and the upcoming first anniversary of the scheme. To get involved, visit cdsvic.org.au/message-in-a-bottle and respond to the prompt "Why is recycling important to you?” for the opportunity to have the message included in a bottle for thousands of visitors to see. Our website includes handy resources to learn more about recycling and the scheme ahead of your contribution online. The installation will showcase hundreds of messages alongside a visual representation of the circular economy, encouraging young Victorians to learn more about recycling.
Thanks for your support,
