Year 3 Newsletter
Dear Parents,
Now the fun begins!
The following few weeks will see us begin Swimming, attend Camp, meet our new teachers and peers in Transition for 2025, and celebrate with our Big Day In! I hope you are all as excited as we are.
This week in:
Literacy
Our Science of Reading focus has been on making words by combining prefixes, base words and suffixes. We’ve explored the reading comprehension strategy of ‘Making Inferences’ and are finalising our lost few reading assessments.
Our Information reports are now edited and all students have begun publishing these. We are excited to send these home and celebrate the hard work every student has put into their work.
Mathematics
These past two weeks we explored Time, looking at the duration of time in everyday life, and learning to tell time to the hour, half an hour and minute on an analogue clock!
This week we began looking at 2D/3D Shape. We’ve learnt that the ‘D’ in 3D means ‘dimensions’, with the third dimension being depth, and adding this to our preexisting knowledge of length & width. Finally, we’ve been naming a range of 3D shapes and identifying how many faces, vertices and edges a 3D shape has.
We are now in assessment mode, completing a range of online Essential Assessment tasks.
Inquiry
The students have loved exploring the different celebrations such as the Italian Carnevale festival, Diwali, Abu Simbel and Chinese New Year.
They have now been grouped and have chosen a world celebration to complete a News Report on. So far they have researched their celebration and have begun writing their script. The students will begin practising and filming their video over the coming weeks.
We are also finding time in our Inquiry sessions (and any spare time!) to complete the Celebration Project presentations. These have been fantastic!
Important Information
Camp:
An email will come out on Monday with the final information for camp.
This will include all of the vital information necessary prior to and after camp. Please keep your eye out for this and read through it carefully.
Oral Presentation - Festivals & Celebrations.
A reminder that this was due Monday 25th November. Please encourage your child at home to complete this as soon as possible if they haven’t already.
This is a formally assessed piece, and will contribute to your child’s report.
Big Day In
This year we will be completing a Big Day In on Thursday 19th December (final week).
Our plan, weather dependent, is to go across to our Oval and Adventure Playground for a fun picnic. We intend on taking down some sporting equipment, and giving the students some time to play on the oval or enjoy some time on the Adventure Playground.
We will finish our day with a cool, calm and quiet movie in 3B & 3C, celebrating with some delicious popcorn and yummy Zooper Dooper.
Homework
Due to camp and other commitments, we are beginning to wind down our homework expectations.
We are no longer asking for diaries to be brought in, however encourage students to continue achieving their 80 minutes of reading a week.
We will continue to set a number of Tasks on Mathletics for the students to complete throughout the week, particularly as a way of revising earlier taught topics.
What’s coming up:
- Camp: Wednesday 4th December - Friday 6th December. Please have your child at the Adventure Playground at 8:30 am on Wednesday morning.
- Year 3 Swimming program - Commences Monday 2nd December.
Refer to the email for further details.
- Transition - Monday 2nd & Tuesday 3rd December. Your child will participate in two single transition sessions next week, meeting their new teacher and fellow peers.
- Year 3 Big Day In - Thursday 19th December
- Final Day of term - Friday 20th December (Early dismissal @ 1:30pm)
