On the 18th November, our Year 7 Boys Basketball Team competed in the State Finals in Wantirna South. In their first match, they narrowly lost to Catholic College Sale.
They then faced Rowville Secondary College, the eventual champions, and had another loss against an extremely good side.
The team showed resilience to finish strongly with a win against Notre Dame Shepparton in their final game. It was a great effort to make it this far, having already won both the District and Regional Championships to qualify for the State Finals.
Congratulations to Huon B., Dakota R., Lucas M., Joe B., Reef K., Harrison L. and Aidan Mc. who showed incredible skill and determination throughout each tournament, mostly competing (and often beating) specialised sport schools.
On the 21st of November, the school proudly hosted Artwave 2024, an inspiring showcase of creativity, hard work, and innovation. Senior students, along with their family and friends, gathered to celebrate remarkable works across diverse disciplines, including art making and exhibiting, media, product design, fashion, and visual communication and design.
The evening was brilliantly MC’ed by Year 12 artist Asher, whose charisma set the tone for the event. Highlights included heartfelt speeches and award presentations delivered by college captains Saskia and Thomas, as well as captivating musical performances by the talented Violet and Makenzie, who added a melodious touch to the celebration.
A special moment of the night was the event’s opening, graced by guest artist Ella Carroll, whose presence inspired both students and attendees.
A huge thank you goes out to the students, staff, and school community for making the night unforgettable. Special appreciation goes to the exceptional Arts and Tech staff, who dedicated countless hours to curating an outstanding exhibition of student artworks, films, and designs.
Artwave 2024 truly highlighted the creativity and passion of our students, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended. We look forward to seeing what our talented young artists will achieve next!
Jacyl Shaw, Executive Director of the Harpswell Foundation and board director for ACRE, recently joined Melbourne’s Social Enterprise Schools Trading Day launch at the QVM Pop-Up Precinct! While there, she connected with Surf Coast Secondary College’s own inspiring young entrepreneurs; Zebe and Rommy.
Zebe and Rommy have been using their creativity to make a difference, crafting beautiful, sustainable products like tote bags, hair scarves, scrunchies, and plushies—all for charity. Through this initiative and their newly formed connection to Harpswell’s Foundation Program, Zebes’ and Rommy’s products were sent to Cambodia where they were gratefully received.
We couldn’t be more proud of Zebe and Rommy who are going above and beyond to make a difference.
On the 19th November we held our final whole school assembly for 2024.
This provided time for us to acknowledge Remembrance Day as a community, as well as celebrating many recent student achievements.
We also celebrated our newly appointed 2025 College Captains, Sienna McC, Riley C, Madeleine B and Lylah J. Congratulations, and we look forward to having you represent SCSC this coming year!
On the 28th November we celebrated the achievements of our year 12 students at GMHBA Stadium.
We are so pleased to be able to recognise the Class of 2024 with a Valedictory Ceremony and Dinner this year and are excited to that families where able to attend and celebrate with the graduating class.
We wish our year 12 students all the best as they begin life after high school!
Shinay G. competed in the Regional WorldSkills competition on August 7th at the Gordon Davidson Restaurant, earning a silver medal in the VETIS Food & Beverage category.
If invited, she will advance to the Nationals in Brisbane in June 2025 and could be selected to join Team Australia for the 2026 WorldSkills International Competition in China. There's another regional nomination process before participants receive formal invitations, so Shinay is hopeful for the next steps.
In addition, Shinay has been nominated for the Culinary Excellence Award in the Gordon Awards for Excellence. This award recognizes students for their commitment to training, academic achievement, leadership, and community involvement. The process includes submitting a written application, an interview in February, and the awards ceremony in March 2025 at The Pier Geelong. We're hopeful for her success in both opportunities.
Surf Coast Secondary Art Academy would like to give a BIG thank you to Angelsea Primary school who have collaborated with us to create 5 new murals for their school building.
Our students Penny S, Florence T, Tahlia F, Harlow G, Bronte C, Theo D, Lexi G, Holly D, Lily C, Kendra H-D made us all so proud as they engaged and led small groups of young students to paint the murals increasing their skill and painting techniques as they worked.
A HUGE thank you to all the students involved for taking the time out of school to work with our community on such a rewarding project.
The murals will be finalised by Angelsea Primary students over the coming week so we will post photo updates when completed.
