Learning and Teaching

Art

We had a very special visitor in the art room this week; portrait artist, Daniel Butterworth. He explained that art can be anything and you can make art WITH anything, so we made self-portraits using soy sauce and Vegemite! It was a little messy and a lot of fun.

Isea icare Workshop 4

Last Wednesday, the isea icare Marine Ambassadors participated in their fourth and final workshop for the year. The workshop took place at Jack’s Beach Reserve, which is a beautiful area on the foreshore of Crib Point.

There were 60 students from 7 different schools on the Peninsula.

Firstly, the ambassadors listened to a talk from the Rangers and learnt about the many different plants, animals and birds that live in the area. We were even lucky enough to see a Tawny Frogmouth sleeping in the fork of a tree. One of the highlights was going for a walk with the Rangers on the boardwalk, over the mangroves and tasting some of the edible plants that thrive in this area.

After morning tea, we were fortunate to have an indigenous person teach us about the Indigenous history of the area and share some artefacts which belonged to her father. We were then taught how to start a fire by rubbing two sticks together. This required teamwork, persistence and hard work. Sadly, we were not successful, however, a group from another school did create sparks and with some help, a fire was started.

We all had a picnic lunch together and the isea icare leaders, Jacqui and Ellie, shared some yummy treats with us. The workshop finished with each ambassador being presented with a certificate and a group photo was taken. It has been an awesome year of learning and fun and we would highly recommend students apply to become an ambassador when they are in Year 6.

25/11  Green Team News

Last Friday saw the temperature rise above 30 degrees so apart from giving the vegetable seedlings a good drink, it was not a day to be out in Brendan’s Garden. We are happy to report that all the vegetables are growing well, especially the zucchinis, so we think we will have an abundance of summer fruit and vegetables to harvest in the future.

On Friday afternoon, the Green Team met in the MPR and prepared for their assembly. It was a great opportunity to reflect on all the different projects we have worked on during the year and some of the things the students have learnt about growing plants. The students are very excited to share their experiences with the school and teach everyone about the various ways plants can be grown.
