Stage 4

CAPA

Across the term, Stage 4 have been learning how to make sculptures out of clay. We have all made a small cup to practise our basic skills (pinching, coiling and slab) and then we built a larger sculpture with our new skills. To finish the year, we will be making sculptures out of card.

PDHPE

This term, Stage 4 students have dived into the exciting world of invasion games, kicking things off with Netball and Oz Tag. They've been sharpening their offensive and defensive skills, learning how to think strategically on the field, and showing great teamwork and sportsmanship along the way.

As the weather heats up, don’t forget to send students with a water bottle so they can stay hydrated and keep bringing their energy to every lesson!

Myths and Monsters in English

This term in Life Skills English, students have been exploring the fascinating world of myths and natural phenomena. Across many cultures, people have told stories to explain how the world works, from the rising of the sun to the crashing of waves, from droughts to storms.

Students have read and discussed myths such as:

  • The Rainbow Serpent (Australia) – explaining rivers and waterholes

  • Finn McCool and the Giant’s Causeway (Ireland) – explaining the strange rock formations by the sea

  • The Cyclopes (Greece) – who forged thunderbolts and earthquakes

  • Vritra (India) – the serpent who caused drought until Indra released the rains

  • Charybdis (Greece) – the sea monster who created whirlpools

  • Zhulong, the Torch Dragon (China) – who controlled day, night, and the seasons

  • Fenrir (Norse Mythology) – the giant wolf who breaks free at Ragnarök, bringing chaos and destruction to the world

Through these stories, students have practised identifying characters, settings, and language features, while also thinking about how ancient people explained the natural world before science.

Currently, students are creating their very own mythical monsters.

Each student is inventing a creature, describing what it looks like, what powers it has, and, most importantly, what natural phenomenon it explains. These myths will finish with a short story showing how their monster interacts with people, gods, or heroes.

This project combines creativity, writing skills, and art, and the students are very excited to bring their monsters to life on the page.

Stage 5

 HSIE

This term we have been learning about environmental changes. We have been shocked over and over again!

We have found out that:

  • If everyone in the world lived like us we would need at least 4 planet earths (spoiler: we have only one)

  • And that if we keep to business as usual, in the coming decades there will be more plastic than fish in our oceans

English

During this term the stage 5 students have been reading the text don’t call me Ishmael, where they have been further exploring their reading skills, analysing the text and understanding what the text means by voicing their opinions as well as answering questions relating to the text. Stage 5 students have also been learning about the different techniques that are used in the text.
