A note from the College Counsellors: Supporting our Community through Grief and Loss

We acknowledge that this term has been a challenging one for many in our wider community. Recent events have brought a sense of sadness and loss that has been felt across schools, families, and friendship groups, and we recognise the impact this can have on our Mt A community.

Grief can look very different from person to person - for some it may involve sadness, anger, or worry; for others, it might be tiredness, trouble concentrating, or changes in behaviour. Young people, in particular, may not always have the words to express how they are feeling. As adults, we can support them by being present, listening, and gently reassuring them that all feelings are valid and that help is available.

To support parents and carers in navigating these conversations, headspace National is offering a free Parent/Carer Webinar: Supporting Young People Impacted by Grief and Loss on Thursday 4th September, 6:30–7:30pm. This online session will explore ways to support young people through grief, build awareness of available services, and provide practical strategies for self-care and help-seeking. Details are available via the attached flyer.

Families are also encouraged to visit the Educational Wellbeing tab on the Mt A website for further resources. Additional supports include:

  • Lifeline: 13 11 14
  • Kids Helpline: 1800 55 1800
  • Beyond Blue: 1300 22 4636
  • headspace:www.headspace.org.au

Our Counselling Team remains available for students who may need someone to talk to. As a community, may we continue to care for one another with kindness and compassion during this time.
