Mathematics Challenge

MATHS CHALLENGE DAY WITH ANDREW LORIMER -DERHAM

On the 4th of September, 12 Maffra Secondary College students from year 7 and 8 attended a maths games day at Wurruk Primary School. Although Sale College had many more teams, our team of four still managed to overrule them and win some cool prizes. Throughout the day we challenged ourselves and had a great deal of fun. We used different sorts of resources to figure out problems and puzzles, and there was even a raffle which one of our Maffra students won. I recommend this experience.

Andrew Lorimer-Derham, the presenter, currently spends most of his time running student workshops and staff PD around the idea of ‘Intentional Fun’ where he takes great pleasure in demonstrating what a joyful, imaginative and playful pursuit maths can be. He is not afraid to think differently, make mistakes and try new things. The Maffra Secondary College students were inspired by Andrew’s enthusiasm for solving maths problems. They enjoyed collaborating, working individually or in pairs, to solve problems using a range of strategies. Congratulations to every member of the three teams who took part in the interschool event, and in particular to Aiden, Chance, Tilly and Evie who were acknowledged for being the most successful team on the day!
