Boys Cultural Connection Group

Indigenous Traditions and Bush Food

Recently our Boys Culture Connection group embarked on an exciting journey to connect with Indigenous traditions and bush foods.

They began with lessons of crafting Bardi grub wires, a traditional tool used to catch these grubs. After mastering the technique, we practiced using PVC pipe and marshmallows, honing our skills in a fun and safe way.

Next we headed out to the Narrandera common, eager to put our new skills to the test by searching for Bardi grubs. We carefully examined numerous holes in the ground known to be grub habitats but, unfortunately were unsuccessful in catching any this time. Undeterred we expanded our search to find Witchetty grubs, another important bush food, thankfully we were able to discover a few hidden in the trees. Curious and adventurous, a couple of the boys even tried tasting the Witchetty grubs, embracing the full experience of traditional bush food.

The day was not only educational but also a great way for the group to connect with cultural practices and the natural environment. Our Culture Connection group looks forward to many more hands on experiences like this, deepening our understanding and appreciation of Indigenous culture.
