Assistant Principals' Report

Hello everyone and welcome to our newsletter article,

Refugee Education Support Program (RESP)

Heidelberg Primary School (HPS) successfully applied for funding from the Refugee Education Support Program (RESP) provided by the Department of Education (DE). The Centre for Multicultural Youth (CMY) administered the funding and liaised with the school to determine a project and identify the expertise needed to implement the project successfully.

The project aimed to undertake a needs analysis and response to support Heidelberg Primary School to develop improved communication and engagement with families from likely-refugee, migrant and culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds.

To fulfill this aim, the project’s objectives were to conduct a series of consultations with representatives of refugee or migrant and CALD families about their experience when they first come to the school. Followed by teachers and parents codesigning a series of resources that may support better engagement and communications with the school.

The project also included the adaptation of the seven videos developed by the Centre for Culture, Ethnicity and Health (CEH) with funding from the CMY-RESP Program on how to use Compass. These were adapted by using a login provided by the school and inserting the school’s logo. The videos are in English.

CMY contracted CEH to undertake the needs analysis consultations, co-develop resources with families, and to write a Guide for the school so they can replicate the process with other families. Family Engagement Guide is available from the school.

I would like to acknowledge firstly, the generosity of the parents who participated in the project. Without their active and valuable engagement in the consultation and codesign sessions, we would have not been able to complete this project.

We also wish to thank the collaboration and support provided by Centre for Culture, Ethnicity and Health (CEH) staff Tere Dawson and Melissa Rigby, Centre for Multicultural Youth (CMY) staff (Regina Agustin) and Foundation House staff (Thao Pham).

Thank you also to our Heidelberg Primary School Refugee Education Support Program (RESP) team who have done an enormous amount of work this year. This work will benefit our school into the future.
