FOUNDATION NEWS

The Foundation students have experienced another week of wonderful learning opportunities!

Over the past two weeks, we have been very lucky to participate in the Fire Ed Program which is run by the Fire Fighters from Brunswick Fire Station. Prior to the officers coming into our school, we participated in lots of learning about the special helpers in the Community. The students activated their prior knowledge to identify paramedics, police, crossing people, doctors, nurses, posties and of course fire fighters, as essential community people who keep everyone safe.

Stories were read, templates completed and lots of learning about ‘Good Fires, Bad Fires’, smoke detectors, and what to do if a fire occurs at your home or school. We were given homework to identify a Safe Meeting Place where the family could meet in case a fire ever happens.

On Friday, the firefighters Adrian, Brian, Stuart and Peter returned so that we could inspect the equipment aboard the Fire Truck and have an opportunity to squirt the fire hose. It was so much fun, thankfully the teachers did not get too wet!

Another highlight of the week was our incursion from Bunnings last Tuesday. Stephanie, an employee from Bunnings came to share her expertise about planting and looking after plants in the garden. This term we are involved with the Sustainability program which is run by Mrs Gasbarro, and she organised for Stephanie to visit our school. We identified that plants need water, sun, soil to grow. We all decorated a pot, put in some soil and planted a Marigold plant in each of our pots. We now have the responsibility to take great care of the plant at home so that it will bloom.

YEAR 1/2 NEWS

Wow! With only three full weeks of the term left, Term 4 has already been a memorable one and there are still many exciting opportunities ahead!

A few weeks ago, the Year 1/2 students received an email from Mrs Watson, who wondered how we might make our school yard more welcoming for the local birds that visit us each day. After thoughtful discussions, our cohort decided to put our skills to the test. As inquirers, we have been learning to think like environmental designers, engaging in a full design process to create an inviting birdhouse for our school grounds. So far, this has involved practising collaboration, conducting research, and developing detailed plans. We have now completed our designs and have just begun constructing our prototypes. We are excited to continue this project and look forward to sharing our hard work with families at the upcoming Celebration of Learning. Stay tuned!

As mathematicians, we have been learning about mass and capacity. Last week,  we  participated in a range of hands-on learning experiences to deepen their understanding of mass. We were very excited to use scales to compare the mass of different objects, using informal units of measurement to help make accurate comparisons. This week, we are beginning to explore capacity. We will investigate the capacity of various containers and compare two containers by predicting which one can hold more. We are developing the important understanding that the space inside a container determines its capacity, not just its height, width, or shape.

As people of faith, we have been deepening our understanding of the Creation Story. As thinkers, we have explored the connection between the Creation Story and Laudato Si’ – Care for Our Common Home, written by Pope Francis. Through discussions and reflective drawings, students have shared our ideas about how we can act as stewards of creation and care for our common home.

YEAR 5/6 NEWS

Literacy

As writers, we have begun publishing our engaging stories. Students have been revising and editing their drafts, refining their ideas, and strengthening their sentence fluency to bring their narratives to life. They are carefully considering their word choice, description, and structure to ensure their writing is clear, expressive, and enjoyable to read. It has been wonderful to see the pride students are taking in their work as they move through the final stages of the publishing process.

Mathematics

As mathematicians, we are investigating operations and exploring how they connect across a range of problem-solving situations. Students have been applying multiple strategies, explaining their mathematical thinking, and evaluating which methods are most efficient. Through rich tasks and discussions, they are developing flexibility and confidence in their use of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. It has been fantastic to see the persistence and curiosity students bring to their learning.

Inquiry

As inquirers, students are preparing to explain their product and pitch their design in readiness for our upcoming Shark Tank votes. They are refining prototypes, evaluating their solutions, and rehearsing persuasive pitches that communicate both the purpose and impact of their design. This process has encouraged collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking as students work to strengthen their ideas. All of this learning will come together during our Celebration of Learning on Thursday, the 4th of December, where students will proudly share their projects with families.
