Creating Futures Together
Theme: “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy”
Wheelers Hill Secondary College was proud to celebrate NAIDOC Week 2025 with a vibrant and meaningful week of activities that brought our school community together in a spirit of joy, respect, and reflection. The theme, “Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy,” recognised the vital role of young people in carrying forward the powerful legacy of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
This year’s celebration was led by our inspiring Student Executive Leaders. Aiden Carmichael (Respect), supported by Lara Williams (Excellence) and Amy Parson (Creativity), brought energy and care to every aspect of the week’s organisation. Their leadership helped create an inclusive and welcoming environment where all students and staff felt invited to take part and learn.
The week began with an Acknowledgement of Country and a thoughtful student-led announcement that introduced the meaning and significance of NAIDOC Week. Around the school, colourful posters sparked curiosity and conversation, while selected activities kept the celebration alive throughout the week.
Among the most memorable moments was a lunchtime screening of The Sapphires, an uplifting Australian film based on the true story of four Yorta Yorta women who form a soul group and perform for troops during the Vietnam War. The film offered a heartfelt look into First Nations strength, identity, and sisterhood, and was warmly received by students.
Another highlight was the lunchtime Indigenous Games, which encouraged friendly competition, teamwork, and cultural appreciation. Students participated with enthusiasm, engaging with the traditional games in a fun and respectful way that brought people together.
The school library also contributed to the celebration with a curated collection of books by First Nations authors and illustrators. This display encouraged students to discover stories that reflect the voices, experiences, and creative talents of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
Throughout the week, Aiden, Lara, and Amy fostered a positive, inclusive atmosphere that encouraged cultural learning, community spirit, and pride. Thanks to their thoughtful planning and leadership, NAIDOC Week at WHSC was a joyous celebration of strength, vision, and the enduring legacy of our First Nations peoples.
