What's happening around our school...
Over the last week, the Foundation students have been learning about digraphs! These are two letters that make one sound. Look at our words with the digraph /th/.
We have been discussing subtraction. Did you know that subtraction can also be called ‘taking away’ and ‘minus’? When we subtract, we noticed that we end up with ‘less’ than what we started with. We played some games to practise subtracting.
In Grade 1/2 Literacy and Inquiry sessions this week, we have been enjoying reading, 'Are We There Yet?', by Alison Lester. We have been learning how to connect a story in a book with our own personal experiences of home and travel. Students enjoyed recalling a time in the car when they had said, "Are we there yet?", and were keen to share memories of their travels and adventures. They also used facts about the Daintree Rainforest to write postcards.
In our Grammar sessions, we have also been learning about compound words. Students worked cooperatively in small groups to make posters demonstrating their new knowledge.
3/4 Celebration Showcase
The 3/4 students finished last term with a fantastic Open Afternoon, proudly presenting their celebration posters and slide shows to students from across the school and visiting families. They loved sharing all they had learned about their chosen celebrations, answering questions, and explaining the meaning behind their work. It was wonderful to see their confidence and enthusiasm as they showcased their creativity and knowledge. Well done, 3/4!
In Literacy, we are turning our focus to information reports. Students have been exploring key text features and understanding the purpose of information reports. They are also developing valuable skills in researching and analysing information effectively. The Grade 5/6s will then get to put these research skills into use when they create their very own information reports in the coming weeks.
This term, our focus is on history through our learning unit Australia as a Nation. Students are discovering the origins of democracy worldwide and how these historical developments have influenced Australia’s democratic government. We are exploring the different levels of government in Australia - including local, state/territory, and federal parliaments - as well as the court system. Up next, students will investigate voting processes, laws, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens.
Later this term, the Grade 5/6s will have the opportunity to dive deeper by researching and presenting on one of the topics we've explored. We’re excited to see their insights and creativity shine through their projects!

“I enjoy working with the younger grades. I also enjoy the opportunity of helping Mrs Shaw with other parts of the Art program at school like setting up and displays.
My favourite thing to do in Art is painting and using clay. AND I love that the other Art monitor is my best friend.
I love to paint my own unique paintings at home.
And I’m a dancer. I do five hours of dancing classes each week.”

“As an older sister to three, I like working with younger kids because it fills me with joy to see their creativity spark.
In Art I enjoy using clay to create whatever I want, making it how I feel it should be. I also enjoy drawing and painting. If I have an idea, I can just put my mind to the piece of paper.
I’m also a gymnast and I’m hoping to become professional. I do five hours of gymnastics each a week.
I really enjoy being an Art monitor because it gives me more time to do what I love”
