New VTLM Guides

All Victorian government schools are expected to begin implementing the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM) 2.0 from 2025 and to have it fully embedded in their teaching and learning programs from the start of the 2028 school year.

To support this, we have published guides that set out strategies and practices for the VTLM 2.0's 'Explicit teaching' elements of teaching.

Please use the guides to help plan implementation of the VTLM 2.0, and share the guides with teachers. You can download the guides from Arc

The guides are informed by consultation with education experts, regional staff, teachers and school leaders. They:

  • articulate the evidence-based teaching strategies and practices within the VTLM 2.0
  • include practical examples of classroom techniques and activities for each VTLM 2.0 element of teaching
  • support teachers’ reflection on current practice and planning to gradually embed the VTLM 2.0 in their teaching and learning programs.

Planning

  • Collaboratively develop quality curriculum materials
  • Enact a Multi-Tiered System of Supports
  • Prepare to teach students in your classroom

Enabling learning

Explicit teaching

Supported application

It is expected all schools, as needed, will develop their teaching and learning programs to reflect this framework across all learning areas and grade and year levels. Commencing in 2025, schools have 3 years to complete any necessary changes.

As part of our new 2024-2028 School Strategic Plan we will work to incorporate these Essential Elements of Teaching and Learning (including Essential Literacy Elements) into our Jackson Teaching & Learning Model.

For more information, refer to the revised VTLM 2.0

Jackson Learner

This year, as part of the School-wide Position Behaviour Support (SWPBS/PBIS) program, we have recently redefined our behaviour expectations. These are still focused around our three values of safety, respect and responsibility.

Over the last four years we have added additional learner characteristics which we teach our students to become a Jackson Learner. These eight Employability Skills will enable all of our students to be contributing members of the wider community. Each term we focus on one characteristic/skills of learning and independence as a throughline of our Inquiry units.

Please see above our draft employability skills posters to represent these learner characteristics. We will publish these in Term 3 in readiness for Values Week in Term 4. To reduce visual distractions and reduce cognitive load for our learners, there is no expectation these are all displayed in classrooms. However, you may wish to display the two we will focus this term.
