In the classroom

Grade 1 / 2

Thank you to all families for the support you have provided for our RE and Inquiry lessons so far this term, it has been fantastic to see students sharing their favourite books, photos and special items. We will continue our learning about history by visiting the Nathalia Historical Society next Thursday afternoon. We are looking forward to learning more about life in the past.

Grade 3/4

The Grade 3 and 4 students have been studying The Iron Man by Ted Hughes. It has been a great story that has captured our attention and imagination. We are currently working on an Art piece to depict a scene from the story. The students have shared some of their thoughts as follows....

Written by Ted Hughes

Iron Man is a good fighter, he even defeated a huge dragon. The dragon was as big as Australia, much bigger than the Iron man. The huge dragon mostly got called Space-bat-angel-dragon.

The Iron Man challenged the Space-bat-angel-dragon to a test of strength, Space-bat-angel-dragon thought he would win with no doubt.  There was a bed where they fought. The Iron Man lit it on fire. He lay there burning. The Space-bat-angel-dragon was watching. The Iron Man stood up in no pain. The Iron Man said to the dragon, "Go to the sun." He did and he was defeated by The Iron Man. - By Abbie Daniel. Gr. 4

We are making The Iron Man In art. I am making the scene where The Iron Man is walking into the sea to find his ear. When he finds his ear, he will walk back to the shore and then he will walk to the farmers farms and eat all the iron cars and tractors. The next morning The Iron Man had eaten all the cars, the tractors and headers.

My favourite scene was the bit where The Iron Man was doing a challenge of

Strength with the Space-Bat-Angel-Dragon.

So here's what happened.  A weird dragon cane out from the sky the size of Australia. The dragon landed on Australia, which I think that is a very dumb idea because he is the size of Australia.  Anyway, let's get back to the story. After the dragon landed on Australia, he told them they were going to have to plan him a meal. When Hogarth heard this, he told The Iron Man to do something about it and The Iron Man did do something about it because he would have no iron to eat. - By Blaire Gr. 3

I am recreating a scene where The Iron Man fell down the cliff and all his parts got scattered and then he had to put himself back together from The Iron Man book by Ted Hughes. In the scene, his iron arms broke off, and the hands broke off the arms, his iron ears fell off and his eyes fell out, his iron head fell off the body. - By Camden, Gr. 3

A powerful scene in Ted Hughes' The Iron Man is when the Iron Man faces the space-bat-angel-dragon. Hogarth, the young boy who becomes friends with the Iron Man, begs with him to save the world from the space-bat-angel-dragon, saying that if the creature destroys humanity, there will be no scrap metal left for the Iron Man. The Iron Man then has a brilliant idea and challenges the creature to a contest of heat, suggesting the sun as the ultimate fire.

Another notable scene in The Iron Man, The Iron Man's arrival on the beach after falling from a cliff. He lands with a loud "CRASH," separating his arms, legs and head from his torso. He lies in pieces, but slowly, he puts himself together with his three fingers and his thumb standing the hand up and his forefinger like a long nose, he begins to reassemble himself. This scene highlights the Iron Man's resilience and ability to overcome physical damage, setting the stage for his character development and interactions with the human world.

In The Iron Man, the Iron Man's eyes change colour, showing his mood or state. Specifically, his eyes can glow red when he's angry or upset, and blue when he is happy. They also change to white or infrared when searching the sea. - By Bodhi Bourke Gr 4

The Iron man's eyes turn red, white, infra-red and the book is pretty good. I liked it, definitely 8/10 and my favourite part of the book was the space-bat-angel-dragon. The Iron Man is called the Iron Man because he is made out of iron, and he is giant but not bigger than the space-bat-angel-dragon. The dragon is the size of Australia, and the dragon comes from space. Hogarth found the Iron Man and was scared but came to the junk yard where the Iron Man hangs out for food. He would every day! I would read the book again. The Iron Man is little to the space-bat-angel-dragon and the dragon likes to eat live things and the Iron Man has heaps of bolts and iron. The humans tried to kill the space-bat-angel-dragon because its tail was on Tasmania and the Iron Man is about 100 foot, he is really tall but not taller than the dragon. I want to call the dragon Bob. The start of the story the Iron Man fell off a cliff and broke into pieces. I feel like this Iron Man is better than the Avengers Iron Man.

The author's name is Ted Hughes and he's a good author. I don’t know what the author looks like. When Bob was fighting the Iron Man, he is a bad dragon and he lost. The Iron man and Bob were taking turns of burning and I was scared for The Iron man but he WONNNNN!                                                                                                                               By Layla Truman Gr. 3

In art we are creating an Iron Man scene from the book. I am making the scene were the Iron Man walks through the little village in the town. He was walking through the little village to find Iron. The village the Iron Man was walking through was a little cozy English village.         By Matilda  Gr 4

In Art our class is making an Iron Man collage inspired by the book The Iron Man by Ted Hughes. We just finished the book on  Monday, so we are listening to it again on Audible. Yesterday we designed the background. Some people did a village, some did a fishing scene and others did in the water. I am doing a village scene. We can also bring boxes to cut. It will be so much fun. FUN FACT ABOUT IRON Did you know you have iron in your body, but too much iron can be poisons for your body. - By Riva Grade 4.

Hogarth strapped Iron Man in a hole. Then Hogarth went to his friends and said I strapped Iron Man in. Hogarth celebrated then he felt guilty. - By Thomas J Gr 4

Grade 4/5

The students in Year 5 explored various images of Aboriginal art. They used shape, line and texture to create colourful pieces.

Grade 6

In Literacy, students have been reading our novel “Us Mob Walawurru” which has taught them about First Nations Australians culture, and how Australia was during the 1960s. Students have taken notes on the topic of the 1967 Referendum in preparation for their Factual Recounts. Tomorrow, students will write their introductions.

In Numeracy, students have been looking at Fractions, and how to place them on number lines. Students have started looking at equivalent fractions and have used fraction walls to help them identify some
