Year 1

Ms Crane, Ms Conforto, Ms Russo, Ms Harrington, Ms Maher, Ms Ripper and Ms Bowden

Welcome back to Term 4! We are excited to share all the fantastic learning that has been happening since we returned to school.

Literacy

In Phonics, we have learnt the phoneme/grapheme /ar/ as in ‘art party’. Students have practised reading and spelling words with /ar/. We learnt that when spelling, we need to be aware of the difference in pronunciation of the phonemes /ar/ and /u/ and how we make these sounds. Our jaw is more relaxed when pronouncing /u/; and our mouth is in a more open position when pronouncing /ar/. For example, we contrasted /ar/ as in dark and /u/ as in duck.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, students have learnt to locate numbers on a numberline. Students have been able to identify missing numbers on a number line up to 100. We have also compared time using hours, days, weeks and months. Students compared activities based on duration, for example a swimming lesson or brushing your teeth. Students used sentences to describe their reasoning as to which would take more time and why.

Health

In Year 1 for Health, we will be focusing on Human Body Systems. Students began by learning about the skeletal system, including that our bodies have over 200 bones! We learnt that your body can only bend at joints, and that joints are the places where bones are connected together. Students had the opportunity to explore this concept by creating their own skeleton and noticing where the joints are throughout the body.
