World Mental Health Day - Tuesday 10 October, 2023

As a school we use evidence informed programs to best support your daughters within the domain of social and emotional learning.  Two key pillars of social and emotional learning are the Bounce Back program used throughout Massie House which is an evidence-informed Positive Education program built on Positive Psychology, Cognitive Behaviour Theory and social-emotional learning, developed by Professor Toni Noble.

In Preparation to Year 6 we also use the RULER program linked to the work of Dr Mark Brackett at Yale University.

A third key pillar is offering educational opportunities for our parents.  To coincide with World Mental Health Day on Tuesday 10 October 2024 we are delighted to invite our Year 5 to Year 11 parents to an evening with Professor Ian Hickie, Co-director of Health and Policy at the University of Sydney’s Brain and Mind Centre.

Year 3 The SCOTS College STEM Excursion

Recently our Year 3 girls visited Scots College to work collaboratively with Year 3 boys on a STEM challenge and a Science experiment. The STEM challenge was to build a structure using KAPPLA blocks, based on a structure that already exists, or the students could design their own model. The students worked together to plan and build their structure, ensuring that it did not collapse. Their elaborate designs were captivating and architecturally stable, thanks to their expert engineering skills and steady hands.

The Egg Drop was the highlight of the day- the students worked in teams to design a structure that would hold an egg and prevent it from cracking when dropped from a balcony. Paper plates, balloons, straws and masking tape were utilised in their innovative designs to protect their precious eggs. When it was time for the eggs within the contraptions to be dropped, the students watched with baited breath. There was cheering as the egg was dropped, but an urgent silence just before it reached the concrete below to listen for any signs of cracking. Once the contraptions were opened and it was declared whether the eggs cracked or not, the cheers could be heard from Bellevue to Rose Bay. The students celebrated with one another, proud of their achievements, whether they were successful or not in protecting their egg.

It was truly inspiring to see the boys and girls communicate, collaborate and be creative together. The excitement was palpable and the sheer joy on their faces will be a treasured memory for all.

Student quote:

"My favourite part of the day was the egg drop because it was really fun and there were a lot of ideas. When we dropped it, our egg didn’t crack. We put lots of tape on it and there were two balloons so it made the egg slow down. It floated down to the ground."

Write a Book in a Day- Kambala and The SCOTS College Collaboration

Write a Book in a Day requires teams of students to work together to write and illustrate a book in eight hours. Stage 3 students from Kambala and The Scots College collaborated on this project and created six different books that showcased impressive writing skills and outstanding illustrations.

Their completed stories will be offered to hospitals throughout Australia for children who are undergoing cancer treatment. With titles such as Fevile and The Wrecked Ruby, these books are bound to capture the imagination of young readers! The completed books will also be available for borrowing by Kambala students, at the E.J. Watt Library.
