Homework
At Lysterfield Primary School our students work incredibly hard during the day. At 3.30pm when they leave, they need time to unwind and have fun. We believe that in order to live a happy and healthy life, it is important to participate in extracurricular activities outside school. We want students to join sports clubs, Scouts, do music lessons and art classes as these are important for a child’s overall growth and social connections. We also understand that homework puts a lot of stress on families.
In addition to our beliefs, there is no evidence that homework in a primary school setting has a marked impact on students' learning or success. What is proven is that reading daily has a significant impact on a child’s ability to decode and comprehend. As such mandated homework at Lysterfield Primary School is limited to reading daily, including the practising of phonics (letter/sound relationships). Level newsletters will outline the expectations around reading and how teachers will support students with having appropriate texts to read. For some students that may not be making the expected progress for their year level, it may be beneficial for the teacher and parents to work together to reinforce the learning from the classroom with follow-up work.
We also understand that some students and families would like to practise other skills at home. To support this, at the beginning of each school year, parents will be provided with a set of additional resources that can be used for students to practise other curriculum areas. This work is not mandated and it is up to parents to implement and monitor, staff will not correct this work.

Learning Reflection
📖 Literacy
Welcome back, Lysterfield families. It has been wonderful to see all students settled back into classroom routines and ready for learning. We spent the first two days last week getting to know our students and hearing all about what they got up to on the holidays. In reading, we have begun our Matilda unit, exploring the characters in the story and learning how similes are used to create vivid descriptions. During writing lessons, students have revised when to use the articles 'a' and 'an', and have been learning the difference between simple, compound and complex sentences using conjunctions such as because, but and so. In word work, we have focused on the silent final e, as well as base words, suffixes and the digraphs ti, si and ci.
Preview:
We will continue to read Matilda, introduce new vocabulary words and begin our narrative writing.
➗ Maths
For the next few weeks, our Maths unit will focus on counting and place value. This week, students explored odd and even numbers and how to identify them, as well as reading, writing and representing five and six digit numbers. Students have also been revising their Maths Masters goals and practising the skills they need to work towards them. We will begin testing students in the coming weeks.
Preview:
Over the next fortnight, students will be learning to compare and order numbers, as well as write them in both standard and non-standard expanded form.
🗺️ Knowledge Rich Unit
This term, our Knowledge Rich Unit is called Australia and Its Neighbours. Students will learn that Australia and its neighbouring countries have varied climates and geographical features that influence their natural and constructed environments. This week, we have explored which countries are Australia’s neighbours, where they are located, and some of their key features.
Preview:
Over the next fortnight, students will explore how climate affects natural features and learn to identify the difference between natural and managed features in Oceania. We will then take a closer look at one of Australia’s neighbours, New Zealand, and investigate it in greater depth.
Wellbeing
This term, we will be following the Friendology wellbeing unit. Our first sessions focus on self-compassion, teaching students strategies to manage their worries and feel calm when they are experiencing big emotions.
