What is the innovation in action program?

Part of the Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series 2026, Innovation in Action isa 1-day school holiday program for high ability students in years 10 to 12 that promises to push the boundaries of traditional learning. The program includes a full day at the Swinburne University of Technology Hawthorn Campus where students engage in hands-on and interactive workshops with design and innovation experts, collaborate with their peers and challenge themselves in a fast-paced environment. In this free program for Government Schools, students will:

  • Form teams with their peers and identify a problem they’d like to solve, framed by the UN Sustainable Development Goals
  • Ideate and brainstorm multiple designs and possible solutions to their chosen problem, applying strategies to identify the best solution
  • Create a rapid prototype of the best fit solution out of readily available, sustainably sourced materials
  • Pitch their project to their peers and vote on the best pitch in a range of categories, with guidance and feedback provided by design and innovation experts

Students will also have the opportunity to take a guided tour of the Hawthorn Campus and will be provided with a catered lunch suitable for all dietary requirements. The program includes 5 hours of extra-curricular student learning, while building on the critical and creative thinking, ethical, intercultural and personal and social capabilities of the Victorian Curriculum 2.0.
