Calling All Debaters!

Are you in Years 9–12 and keen to sharpen your thinking, find your voice, and have some fun along the way? Inter-school debating is back, and we’re looking for students who enjoy ideas, discussion, and a good challenge.

At NHS, our debating team participate in the Debaters Association of Victoria’s competition, including five evening rounds held against other local schools, giving you the chance to test your skills in a supportive but competitive environment.

This year’s competition evenings are held at Coburg High School:

  • Round 1: Wednesday, March 4th, 2026
  • Round 2: Wednesday, April 1st, 2026
  • Round 3: Thursday, June 4th, 2026
  • Round 4: Thursday, June 25th, 2026
  • Round 5: Tuesday, August 4th, 2026

Supported by Ms Balis and Ms Osburn, teams meet on Tuesday lunchtimes in M15 for training, planning, and preparation, so you’ll never be thrown in unprepared. You’ll learn how to analyse topics quickly, build persuasive arguments, write to time, and respond confidently under pressure. These are skills that support learning across all subjects—debating is truly a multi-disciplinary skill.

Beyond the main competition, there are also other public speaking opportunities throughout the year for students who want to extend themselves further.

Debating develops critical and creative thinking, public speaking confidence, problem-solving skills, teamwork, and resilience. It’s challenging, social, and genuinely fun—and it’s also a strong addition to any young person’s résumé, demonstrating leadership, communication, and initiative.

If you enjoy thinking deeply, speaking boldly, or want to push yourself outside your comfort zone, debating could be for you. Come along and make your voice heard! Email Ms Balis (Elenni.balis@nhs.vic.edu.au) if you have any questions.
