Year 3/4 News

Welcome to 3/4!

It has been great to welcome everyone back and see how smoothly our Year 3/4 students have settled into the school year. Students have demonstrated responsibility in caring for their classrooms, their teachers and one another, and are engaging well with classroom routines and learning expectations.

We are enjoying getting back into learning together and are looking ahead to what is coming up, including our upcoming excursion to Bundoora Park Farm. Thank you to our families for your continued support in assisting students with a smooth transition back to school. We look forward to a positive and productive year for our Year 3/4 community.

English Zone

We have begun reading our class novel Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White, where students are being introduced to life on a working farm and the developing friendship between key characters. As the story unfolds, students will explore themes such as friendship, the power of words and the natural world, while learning how characters’ thoughts, actions and dialogue help us understand their relationships and motivations.

In Writing, students have been revisiting the critical elements of a story, such as characters, settings, problems and conclusions, and exploring how these work together to take a reader on an interesting journey. Students have also been building their stamina and confidence through sustained writing. In Spelling, we have been learning about vowel digraphs that make the long a sound, such as ai, ay, eigh and ea, in words like rain, day, eight and break, as well as homophones linked to these patterns, such as break and brake. In Grammar, we have been reintroducing the Year 3/4 grammar routines and focusing on the punctuation that completes different sentences, including full stops, question marks and exclamation marks.

In Mathematics, students have been revising our Maths Daily Review routines. During this time, students revisit maths skills and ideas they have already learned. This regular practice helps students remember their learning, build confidence, and become quicker and more accurate in maths over time. We have also been working together to play maths games and explore problem solving tasks to help build our growth mindset, communication skills and problem solving skills.

Spanish Zone

In the Spanish Zone, students have been revisiting classroom routines and strengthening the essential expressions they need to communicate confidently in Spanish. They have been practising everyday language for the classroom as well as sharing and describing activities from their holidays, helping them build fluency and confidence when speaking.

In Grammar, students have been learning and reviewing the past simple tense, focusing on how to transform verbs from the present to the past in meaningful contexts.

In Writing, students have been developing their sentence-building skills by writing simple and compound sentences using the coordinating conjunctions 'y' and 'pero'. They have also revisited the key elements of a narrative text such as Personajes, Lugar, Emociones, Problema, Acción y Conclusión, and explored how these work together to create engaging stories.

In Mathematics, students have been revising numbers in Spanish through a range of addition and subtraction fluency games, supporting both their mathematical understanding and their language development.
