SCHOOL OF POSSIBILITIES

Captured by Charlotte Seddon

The hall sparkled in the dim light, illuminated by the warm glow of glittering fairy lights. The team of staff had gone above and beyond to bring the theme to life. Summer Nights was the embodiment of St Mel's Hall for the Year 10 Formal. All the girls showed up in the very best, gorgeous, unique, coloured dresses, professional makeup and hair all done up. Even the boys dressed themselves in up nicely! The night was a result of months of student and staff preparation.

The students used their lunchtimes to practice three progressive dances to show their parents. For those who participated, it bridged a few gaps between certain cliques, bringing the cohort more closer than before. It started at 6:30 pm on November 10.

The four Year 10 only dances went well. No one made a mistake and we kept in time!

The parents watched, and then were shocked to be called up to do the Nutbush and Macarena. After they left, the students spent the rest of the night dancing and hanging out in their friend groups. We were all tired by the end of the night, but it was a really

fun night!

With many weeks of anticipation and creative planning finally completed for the evening of Friday, November, 10 the Year 10 cohort got to enjoy their formal. Held at St Mel’s Parish Hall our Summer Nights themed formal was a great success for all the students and their families who got the chance to attend. On the dance floor, students participated in an array of progressive dances and at the end they invited staff, friends and family to join in dancing the Nutbush and Macarena. The cohort brought many proud faces for their participation and dressing up on the night, which they all got to enjoy.

A heartfelt thank you

After all the preparation, practice and sheer enjoyment on the night, the Year 10 Formal was, in everybody's estimation a HUGE success! An event that took many generous hearts and adept hands to organise and set up, St Anne's College would like to extend its enormous gratitude to all those who assisted, making it a  very special night  for our students to remember.

Every detail on the night was the result of our hardworking student Formal Committee who worked in conjunction with our tireless volunteer staff.

A big thank you also goes out to Leesa Shannon, Xavier Tanner and our fabulous Year 11 students, who generously gave so much of their time to teach and coordinate the dances in the lead up to a stellar event. Given the challenging time of year for our Year 11s, the gesture was indeed, remarkable!

To all the additional staff who assisted on the night in selling tickets, arranging seating and decorating as well as providing music, refreshments, photography, supervision and so much more, thank you!

Our sincere gratitude must also go to our ever supportive Parents and Families who not only assisted their students with all the preparations in lead up to the night, but also kicked-up their heels and joined in with the fun!

St Anne's College is extremely proud of its incredible and caring community which plays an integral role in helping our students shine.

A special mention of  gratitude goes out to :

Writing the next chapter in our College’s success story

Beginning the day on Thursday, November 16 with a whole school assembly, seven brave and very impressive Year 11 students took to the stage to deliver their highly polished, earnest, and inspiring 2024 College Captain leadership speeches.

All confident, articulate and engaging public speakers, each of the students presented not only their personal leadership attributes to the assembly but also their vision for the role of inaugural College Captain.

Extremely proud of all the candidates following the speeches, College Principal, Sue said of the candidates,

‘Thank you to the seven brave, wonderful leaders sitting on our stage we are so lucky as a community to have you. You are all very worthy candidates who presented so well today.

‘Just by putting yourself through this process you’ve demonstrated a great capacity to take up the challenge of leadership.

'Whatever the outcome, you’ve all presented yourself in such a positive light and I’m sure that even if you are not successful in this role, your leadership will continue to benefit our community in 2024.’

Following the voting process which includes staff, SOP and SOI students, our inaugural College Captains will be announced at the end of year Mass on December, Friday 8.

𝐃𝐑𝐈𝐕𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐋𝐈𝐅𝐄

In a thought provoking, confronting and informative session, Year 10 and 11 students were presented with a Cool Heads/ Ready to Drive session on Friday, November 10.

Delivered by Senior Constable Leigh Johnston, the hard hitting but engaging session covered vital information regarding:

  • The link between crashes and the GLS ( L, red and green P plates)
  • Speed- 30% of all crashes involve speed
  • Wipe off 5 messaging
  • What causes crashes- 93% are related to human factors
  • Young Driver Crashes- most common causes
  • Distractions- drivers who take their eyes off the road for two seconds or longer double their crash risk.
  • Key restrictions for P1 and P2 drivers
  • Hoon driving and consequences
  • Drink & drug driving
  • Driving while tired or drowsy

With rich Q & A dotted throughout the session, two uncompromising videos were also shown to the students aimed at promoting extreme care and focus while driving at all times.

There will be an opportunity in 2024 for our senior students to attend another Cool Heads/ Ready to Drive session with Senior Constable Leigh Johnston.

An central part of many Remembrance Day services, the laying of wreaths represents notions of eternity, continuity and memory and carry special layers of meaning: Victory, bravery and peace.

Proudly representing the college and laying a wreath on Remembrance Day, Year 11 students Matisse and Riley attended the special memorial service at The Shepparton Cenotaph, while in Murchison, fellow Year 11 student Emily attended the Italian Ossario in the grounds of the cemetery accompanied by college Information Technology learning mentor, Cosimo Rando.

Representing St Anne's College on Remembrance Day

by Year 11 students, Matisse and Riley

On Saturday,  November  11 we attended the Shepparton Cenotaph for The RSL Remembrance Day service. We were asked to represent St Anne's College and participate in the wreath laying ceremony. We felt this was a good opportunity to represent the college at an event that is so important in Australia's history. To acknowledge and recognise that Australia wasn't always the country that it is today and a lot has happened to provide us with the freedoms we have. Riley was proud to attend and wear the medals that his grandfather received. Riley's grandfather received these medals for his service in world war II where he served in New Guinea for most of the war. He was in his early 20s when he served for his country.

Matisse's great grandfather Gerry O'Brien served in World War II in Darwin as a blacksmith. Matisse believes that attending the Remembrance Day service is an important acknowledgement towards those who served in Australia, and reflecting on Australia's vast history. She was proud to represent the St Anne's College community at the service.

The service on Saturday was really well spoken and had both students and adults reading stories and poems as well as singing the National Anthem and God Save the King. I recommend that if you have an opportunity as a student to attend or participate in these types of services that you take it on board.

𝐼𝓃 𝓁𝒾𝒻𝑒, 𝓎𝑜𝓊𝓇 𝓅𝒶𝓈𝓈𝒾𝑜𝓃 𝒾𝓈 𝓎𝑜𝓊𝓇 𝒸𝒶𝓁𝓁𝒾𝓃𝑔 ...

There is perhaps nothing quite so important in life than finding a pursuit that awakens your unequivocal passion and call to purpose. For Year 10 student, Logan Kempinski, being a bee keeper is the only thing he wants to do. Accomplished with 90 bee hives already (with approximately 5.5M bees), Logan states, 𝘐 𝘮𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘨𝘨𝘭𝘦 𝘸𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘢𝘺𝘴, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘐 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘩𝘰𝘸 𝘵𝘰 𝘬𝘦𝘦𝘱 𝘩𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘥𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘴𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘣𝘦𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦. A well informed apiarist, Logan shared his knowledge about bee keeping and the critical role the hive dwellers play in sustaining all plant life with eager and curious Grade 3/ 4 students last Thursday. Humble, concise and fascinating, Logan held the audience's attention with his presentation that included a slideshow and a screening of a short ABC documentary titled 𝙏𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙊𝙫𝙚𝙧 𝙎𝙝𝙚𝙥𝙥𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙤𝙣- 𝙇𝙤𝙜𝙖𝙣. With a Q & A session that lasted well over half-an hour, Logan brilliantly answered a plethora of questions from the younger students that were inquisitive and challenging.

Having been a bee keeper since the age of 12, it will come as no surprise that this inspired environmentalist is also something of a budding entrepreneur who yielded around 800kg of honey last Autumn. If you would like to purchase some of Logan's honey, you can find details within the college's fortnightly newsletter, 𝘪𝘭 𝘨𝘪𝘰𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘦, which is also posted on facebook.

On the eve of Remembrance Day last Friday, Year 10 student and 𝔸𝕣𝕞𝕪 ℂ𝕒𝕕𝕖𝕥, Lincoln presented an avid SOW with an informative session about his experiences in the corp.

Showing the students his equipment and enlightening them on what can be found in his ration pack, Lincoln also showed the students his camouflaged tarpaulin used for camping out. Clearly enjoying the eager younger students questions, Lincoln also explained his likely intention of one day enlisting in the Defence Forces; a family tradition carried on from his great grandfather, grandfather and great uncles.

Friday saw seven of our Year 11 students attend the St Mel's Athletics Day for a day of sunshine and leadership.

Students helped run the hurdles and sprint event, assisted with timekeeping, starting, handing out ribbons and encouraging students.

It was terrific to see our senior students leadership skills on show, and a great way to bond with our sister school St Mel's!

Exams

Year 10 and VCE Unit 2 exams take place from November 20-24. During this time VCE-VM classes continue but all Year 10 and Unit 2 VCE classes are cancelled. Students are only required to attend school for their exams. It is the responsibility of parents and carers to ensure students are supervised during the times they do not have exams and to ensure students travel safely to and from school. A study space will be set up for bus travellers who need to attend at times when they do not have exams.

Introductory Program

All students in Year 11 and 12 at St Anne's college in 2024 will participate in an Introductory Program from  November 27 to December 8. It is very important that all students in Year 11 and 12 in 2024 attend during this time to best set themselves up for success in the VCE program. Students not returning to St Anne's in 2024 may like to seek employment or attend programs at their future place of study. Year 11 students moving into an employment pathway in 2024 will be invited to attend a final school mass and leadership event during which students will be farewelled. More information will be communicated to these students and their families in the coming weeks.

Upcoming events to keep in mind:

November 20 - 24 - Year 10 and 11 Exams

November 27 - December 8 , 2024 Introductory Program for all VCE students

December 8 - Year 12, 2024 Leadership Day

Reminders about expectations

Pastoral Group attendance

Students should arrive at school in time to attend pastoral group each morning commencing at 8.55am.  This is an important part of the day and a time for prayer and reflection.  Teachers are able to follow-up with students and check in on how they are doing. Daily messages are delivered to students at this time.  It is vital that the school completes accurate records for attendance and the roll is marked during this session.

Uniform

It is expected that students wear the correct academic uniform to school on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  On Tuesday and Thursday students are permitted to wear their PE uniform, again this should be the full correct uniform including the St Anne’s tracksuit pants or shorts.  Year 10 students completing the sports coaching elective are permitted to wear their PE uniform on Thursday in addition to the above.

Use of air pods and mobile phones

Students are not permitted to use air pods or mobile phones while at school.  These items are to be left in students lockers during the school day.  Parents are asked not to ring their child’s mobile phone while they are at school or expect them to receive text messages.  If you need to get a message to your child during the school day, please contact the front office who will deliver the message on your behalf.

Your support on these matters is greatly appreciated.

Thank you, Sarah Baglin & Meredith Lia (SOP Leaders)

VCE Exams Navigator 2023

The VCE Exams Navigator 2023 should be read by all students presenting for 2023 VCE external assessments. It contains important information about what you need to know for VCE external assessments. A hard copy was distributed to all students present in class on Friday, July 21 by the subject teachers of: VCE Unit 3&4 Psychology, Business Management, and Vet Engineering Studies. If a student was away, please see the VCE Coordinator for a hard copy. We advise students to retain the VCE Exams Navigator 2023 until they obtain their VCE results.

If you have any queries, please contact Chris Segrave, VCE Co-ordinator.
