Year 3/4

What an incredibly busy and productive term it has been for the Year 3 and 4 students!

English

The reading focus  for this term centred around the Ted Hughes’ classic novel, ‘The Iron Man’. Students thoroughly enjoyed this text while building crucial comprehension skills, such as making text-to-self and text-to-text connections, summarising key events, understanding the author's message, and critiquing stories to help students identify their own reading preferences.

In Writing, students participated in exciting language experiences, including making slime, exploding model volcanoes, cooking and growing grassheads. Students used these hands-on moments to write detailed explanation reports detailing the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of these topics. Additionally, they investigated information reports by independently researching an animal or topic of their choice and showcasing their findings digitally and with poster presentations.

Maths

Students have been developing core math skills, focusing on the four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Students explored how these operations connect to one another and put their skills to the test in real-world financial scenarios, solving problems involving money, calculating change, and representing values in multiple ways. They have also practised their times tables to build quick, fluent recall.

Students explored angles, identifying different types of angles, their features, and finding examples of these in the world around them. During the probability unit, they explored chance events and learned how to describe different outcomes.

Inquiry

This term students explored the significance of Country and Place to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and how connections to land shape culture, identity and daily life. They investigated traditional uses of native vegetation for food, medicine, shelter, and tools, and discussed the importance of national recognitions like National Sorry Day, Reconciliation Week, and NAIDOC Week.
