Occupational Therapy at Croydon SDS:

At Croydon SDS, the Occupational Therapists are Brooke and Eliza. They work with teachers and students to build students’ independence and engagement in activities.

Occupational Therapy is all about helping students to participate in school programs in a way that works best for them. We work with students to help build their participation, engagement and learning in school activities.

You may see our Occupational Therapists work towards the following goals:

  • Fine and Gross Motor Skills:

Students this year have been engaging in a number of physical activities including golf, badminton, hockey, gymnastics etc. Activities have been adapted to support hand eye coordination, balance and motor planning.

  • Self Care and Daily Living Skills:

Students this year have been working on increasing their independence with dressing after swimming sessions. Visual supports are used alongside strategies that encourage students’ engagement in this self-care task.

Some students have also participated in a Laundry Program this year. This program has been developed to support physical, cognitive and executive functioning skills while also learning a valuable life skill – using a washing machine!

  • Sensory Regulation:

Our sensory regulation spaces around the school have been updated with new equipment that promotes movement and sensory regulation. New swings have been installed and students have thoroughly enjoyed accessing these spaces while also supporting their regulation needs.

  • Emotional Regulation:

The Zones of Regulation Toolbox and Website has been developed and rolled out across all classrooms. These interactive games and activities support students to learn about their emotions and strategies to support their regulation in the classroom.

Together, teachers and Allied Health Professionals are working together to support students’ learning at school.

If you have any further questions about how Occupational Therapists are supporting your child or if you would like any further information on strategies to trial at home, please speak with your child’s teacher.
