Gospel Reading: Matthew 9:36–10:8

When Jesus saw the crowds, he had compassion for them because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest."

Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness.

These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon, also known as Peter, and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus; Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed him.

These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions:

"Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans, but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, proclaim the good news, 'The kingdom of heaven has come near.' Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those with leprosy, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment."

Summary

Jesus sees the people with compassion because they are lost and in need of guidance. He calls the Twelve Apostles and sends them out to continue His mission of proclaiming God's Kingdom and bringing healing to others. Jesus reminds them that God's gifts are freely given and should be freely shared. The passage highlights both Christ's compassion and the responsibility of His followers to serve others.

Reflection Questions

  1. How can I show compassion to people who may be struggling or feeling lost?
  2. What gifts has God given me that I can freely share in service of others?

Prayer

Loving God,

You call each of us to be workers in your harvest.

Open our hearts to see others with compassion, just as Jesus did.

Give us the courage to share our gifts generously and to bring hope, healing and kindness to those we meet each day.

May we answer your call with faith and joy, trusting that you are always with us.

Through Christ our Lord.

Amen.
