5-8 Community News

Dear Families/Caregivers,

Can you believe we are half way through the term next week?

Yesterday's Grandparents and Special Friends Day was a huge, huge success. It was so beautiful to see so many families involved in this special day.

We continue to focus on academic success in 5-8 with many of the spaces continuing to read their literature novels. Whilst it has been a theme all year, the kids continue to read and develop their oral literacy, word recognition and comprehension skills, as they each read their text daily.

The current maths topic is coming to a close with many students making some substantial progress in transformation and location.  The last half of the term will see the students finish with geometric reasonings: angles.

This week, myself (Anthony Poppa), Corey Carver and Leanne Reed were heavily supported by our 2024 student leaders: Max, Cooper, Kezia, Zoe, Asha-Rose, Emily, Paddy, Milla and Sienna, who provided additional school tours to all of our new families and students who will be attending our College in 2024. Thank you to all in our community, but especially our student leaders, for leading incredibly well. Our new families not only witnessed the outstanding work that’s conducted at our College, but the commitment you have already displayed so early on in your roles. Some of our students even stayed back after 3.20pm.

I wanted to take the time to really thank our 5-8 staff who have been working incredibly hard. So much preparation and planning to ensure that each of the students are engaged and their learning needs are accommodated for.

SOLE continues to be practiced throughout the community as a reminder for students to continue demonstrating positive behaviour through positive cues and reinforcements. I ask for your support to remind the students about minimising conflict and continuing to encourage positive social interactions between all students. Conflict responses only lead to people feeling upset and the continued upset leads to more feelings of frustration and anger, which could easily be prevented.

We are using the supports outlined below to help students continue to make positive choices at school. Conflict in the yard will be challenged and positive options to manage the situation suggested.

Some of the work from SOLE and the The Resilience Project (TRP) this week can be found below.  It has created some wonderful discussions.
