LITERACY NEWS

The 5/6 students have been exploring visual literacy. Looking at the composition, colour and angles of the photos, students have inferred the meaning, story behind the photo.

They were excited to apply the use of technology to their literacy lesson.

VISUAL LITERACY

I used camera angles and framing to show and tell the story of the picture. I used angles by having the photo come from the ground and show the whole image. I used framing by making the whiteboard the bigger thing to show where all of the character’s wonderings go.

What I could do is make the photo black and white to resemble that maths is only right or wrong (hence the b&w).

I think the author has used colour by making the area surrounding the tomatoes black and

white giving us a feeling that the surroundings are sad and depressing whilst compared to the tomatoes which give us a feeling of happiness and joy. I think framing was another concept of this photo. By putting the tomatoes in the centre of the frame it makes us feel like the tomatoes are important and are going to turn that frown upside down. Also it draws less attention to the hands. It looks like one pair of hands belong to an older character who is handing the tomatoes to a younger character. This might represent that the older figure is handing the key to a happier future to the younger figure. And now it all depends on him and he wants to make the older figure happy and proud.

Looking at this photo I see a young girl and boy reading. By the perspective and size it screams their personalities. One is shy, and the other is confident. There’s a pop of colour on the girl making her brighter and bland colours on the boy. Since the girl looks larger your focus is drawn to her. There is no one else around but yet they don’t notice each other. One of them is crouched down in the corner making him look smaller whilst the girl is standing up is close to the camera making her look bigger.
