Victorian Plan Your Enterprise Competition

This year we had two year 11 students, Hitesh Jammula and Nikhil Mathur who made it to the Victorian State Finals for the Plan Your Own Enterprise Competition. Out of 100 applicants Hitesh and Nikhil made it to the top 5 in the state which is an impressive achievement. They created an app called Medinexus which monitors symptoms for elderly patients and helps them track their medication.

Well done to the boys!

Northern Star Chess State Open Final Results

On Thursday the 9th of October, our chess team competed in the Northern Star Chess State Open Finals, marking the grand conclusion to this year’s interschool chess season. The event featured nine rounds of intense competition, bringing together schools from across the state, including many formidable opponents such as Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School, Mazenod College, Werribee Secondary College, and John Monash Science School.

Suzanne Cory placed 7th overall out of 71 schools, a respectable result in a large and challenging field. While we weren’t able to end on a podium finish, the team showed impressive skill, focus, and fighting spirit throughout the day.

There was still a moment to celebrate, Gian Abriam, our long-standing Suzanne Cory champion, tied for first place in the state with FIDE Candidate Master Tedric Li, both finishing on 8.5/9 points. This was an extraordinary achievement and a well-deserved result for one of the most integral members of our chess community.

A heartfelt thank you to every member of the team for your dedication, enthusiasm, and sportsmanship throughout the year. Each tournament has been a testament to our shared passion for the game and the strong sense of community within our chess program.

As for me; this tournament marked my last one representing Suzanne Cory High School, and I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better ending. Four years ago, I joined this club just hoping to play a few games. I never imagined it would become one of the most defining parts of my time here. From our quiet lunchtime matches to the chaos of State Finals, every moment has meant something.

Chess has taught me more than I ever expected: patience, resilience, and the art of thinking one move ahead, both on and off the board. But most of all, it’s taught me about people, about teamwork, humility, and how even in silence, we learn from each other.

To every teammate, thank you for trusting me, challenging me, and making this journey what it was. I’m leaving with nothing but gratitude and pride in what we’ve built together.

And as I pass the torch to Simran Singh, who will lead the program moving forward, I’m confident the club will continue to grow and achieve even greater things.

This was my last move on the board for SCHS, but the lessons, the memories, and the people behind them will always stay with me.

Three outstanding Year 12 students: Akshya Ajbani, Arnesh Pradhan, and Mahir Asef have achieved remarkable success at the Harvard Crimson Global Quiz Bowl, an international competition that brings together top middle and high school students from around the world.

Under the expert guidance of Mr. Mejia, their chemistry coach, the team showcased extraordinary skill and knowledge in a range of challenging topics, including atomic structure, chemical bonding, reaction types, stoichiometry, and real-world applications of chemistry.

Following an intense preliminary online test and a series of rapid-fire live rounds held via Zoom, the students emerged triumphant ranking number one in Australia as a team, while also sweeping the top three individual national rankings.

Their incredible performance has earned them an invitation to Harvard University for an international awards ceremony celebrating their achievement. While dates are yet to be confirmed, this milestone is already a tremendous accomplishment.

Mr. Mejia shared, “It’s a joy to see students so passionate about science pushing their limits and excelling on a global stage. Their dedication truly sets an example for others.

”Congratulations to Akshya, Arnesh, and Mahir for representing Australia with distinction and demonstrating the power of curiosity, teamwork, and perseverance.
