Hello to our wonderful Year 1/2 families!

We’ve had another busy and exciting fortnight in our level. With our Garden Market fast approaching, we’ve been spending lots of time outdoors caring for our seedlings and preparing our plants. It’s been lovely to see the students so engaged and proud of their growing seedlings and plants.

In Literacy, we have been focusing on developing our grammar and punctuation skills. Students have been working hard to identify the different parts of a sentence such as nouns, verbs and adjectives, as well as exploring the different types of nouns and verbs. We have also been practising identifying where capital letters and boundary punctuation belong, and deciding whether a sentence is a statement, question or exclamation.

In Maths, we are continuing our Rainbow Maths journey and progressing through new skills that can be applied in different areas of Maths. Each day we also complete a ‘Mini Maths Mission’ as part of our daily review. This helps us revise previously learnt concepts and build them into our long-term memory. Recently, we have been investigating strategies for solving worded problems, including reading the whole question carefully and identifying information that is important (and what can be ignored!).

In Wellbeing, we have linked our learning to our upcoming Garden Market. Students have been practising mindfulness and building resilience through guided drawing activities. They have enjoyed learning how to draw different types of flowers and plants and we will be using their beautiful artwork to decorate the bunting for our market.

It’s hard to believe we are already over halfway through the final term! The weeks are flying by and our classrooms continue to be full of learning, laughter and lots of fun.

We hope you have a wonderful fortnight and we can’t wait to see you at our Garden Market!

What We Are Learning

Reminders

  • Arriving On Time: Please ensure your child arrives at school before 9.00am, ready for learning. Our Morning Rigour session, which includes our Write2Read and Rainbow Maths programs, begins at 9.00am and arriving even a few minutes late means students miss key instruction and the calm, settled start they need for a successful day. Thank you for your support in helping all students begin their learning on time.

Creative Creatures with Amazing Adjectives

Come and take a peek at the creative creatures with amazing adjectives, proudly displayed outside 1/2 classrooms! Students designed their own imaginative creatures and used lots of bright, fun adjectives to bring their creations to life. We hope you enjoy their colourful, quirky masterpieces!

Garden Market

We are excited to announce the date for our Garden Market! Join us on Monday 8th December, from 3:00–4:00pm on the stage, for a very special event.

Our Year 1/2 students have been busy planting, watering and caring for a beautiful range of flowers and plants, many grown from seed and others generously donated by Scoresby Bunnings, Yarra View Nursery and Knox Community Gardens. We will also have seeds available for purchase.

Families are warmly invited to come along and support our students’ hard work.

Prices range from 50c to $5, with all proceeds going towards our Year 1/2 end-of-term Celebration Day.

We can’t wait to see you there and share the wonderful seedlings and plants that we have grown together!

Gardening with Sheridan

Last week, we spent time out in the garden with our Chaplain, Sheridan. She has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to all things green, and she took us on a wonderful walk around the school, sharing fun facts along the way. Students learned about the different conditions plants need to grow, how to identify plants and weeds, and even discovered the wide variety of vegetables currently growing in our garden.

Information Report Investigators

The students went on a hunt around the classroom to find mixed-up pieces of different animal information reports. They worked together to sort where the heading, subheadings, paragraphs and pictures should go. We also had great discussions about which subheadings were the most important. What a fun, hands-on way to learn about the structure of an information report!
