Trying new flavours

As a part of our investigation into sustainable practices, we explored various cooking techniques and flavours from our garden. Last week, students in all year levels explored sustainable food practices such as drying herbs, pickling food, making relish, and using what flavours and foods you have. Our Week 4 stall was an excellent success, thanks to the students who volunteered to run the stall Elanor, Henry, Thomas and Max. Customers loved the Choc Peppermint Balls using our fresh peppermint as well as the jars of Rhubarb Relish and Pickled Radish.

Waterways

This last week we extended our focus on sustainable practices, by looking at waterways. Students in Prep - Year 2 read the book 'All the Water in the World' by George Ella Lyon and then considered all the ways we use water in our lives. The older students took a closer look at how our local actions can impact the problem of waste ending up in the ocean. We learnt about the organisation 'Ocean Clean up' and looked at how our own school dam and local creeks (including Jackson's Creek, Riddells Creek and Willimigongon Creek) make their way down into the ocean. We collected what rubbish we could from the dam and realised so much of it came from our lunches, outside activities, rubbish left on the ground and taken by the wind and even sporting equipment left on the oval. The Year 4's made some powerful educational posters to be placed around the school in an effort to remind us of what we can do about waste.

Making rather than buying

To reflect on sustainability issues that arise throughout the Christmas season, the Year 6's have started using their skills to make items rather than buy them. We have 20 new chickens who would appreciate some toys and activities to keep them occupied and engaged. The students have begun designing and building DIY toys/activities for the chickens, only using objects and materials we already have. Other students started making Christmas wreaths using all the cuttings from the Vineyard's Winter prune. They are looking great already!
