Honouring Allhallowtide: A Sacred Season of Remembrance and Hope

As we enter the sacred days of Allhallowtide, we pause to reflect on a deeply meaningful time in the Catholic calendar, a three-day journey of remembrance, reverence, and hope.

Allhallowtide encompasses:

• 31 October – All Hallows’ Eve (Halloween): A vigil of prayer and reflection before the feast of All Saints.
• 1 November – All Saints’ Day: A celebration of all saints, known and unknown, who have lived lives of holiness and now dwell in the presence of God.

• 2 November – All Souls’ Day: A day of prayer for all the faithful departed, especially those in purgatory, as we entrust them to God’s mercy.

   

While Halloween is often seen through a secular lens, its origins are deeply Catholic. The name itself, All Hallows’ Eve, points to its sacred purpose: preparing our hearts to celebrate the triumph of light over darkness, life over death, and grace over sin. 

Traditional customs such as lighting candles, visiting cemeteries, and offering prayers for the dead are acts of love and remembrance that connect us to our faith and heritage.

Allhallowtide offers a beautiful opportunity to:

• Reflect on the lives of saints who inspire us.
• Pray for loved ones who have passed away.

• Teach the values of compassion, dignity, and eternal hope.
