CHS Open Girls Cricket- Round 3 vs Coonabarabran High School
On Thursday 30th October, the IHS Open Girls Cricket Team made up by Hollie W, Milly M, Olivia S, Olivia P, Emma C, Jessica C, Megan S, Alice T, Ruby S, Isabella T & Cobi-Lee S played Coonabarabran High School in Round 3 of the CHS Open Girls Cricket Knockout Competition at Cooma Oval in Narrabri.
The day started on a sombre note, with news breaking about 17 year old Victorian teenager, Ben Austin passing away that morning following an accident during batting practice in the nets the day before. The girls wore black armbands as a mark of respect for Ben and his family.
Inverell Captain Hollie lost the toss and we were sent into field first. Jess took a wicket in the first over, followed closely by Hollie again leading by example, taking 2 wickets in her third over and was unlucky not to get the hattrick. There started a batting collapse by Coonabarabran, who at the end of the 8th over were 7/3. Some outstanding fielding including Olivia who got another run out, followed by another wicket each from Hollie and Jess.
This signalled a change in bowlers, who proved to be a bit expensive with a few no balls and wides. Hollie and Jess then came in for their second spell and the remaining 3 wickets fell soon after that. Coonabarabran were all out for a total of 31 after 18 overs. Bowlers figures included a career best from Hollie, who took 6/2, followed by Jess with 3/1.
After a quick break, it was our turn to bat. Hollie and Jess took to the crease, making it look easy with quick singles and running well between wickets to put up an opening partnership of 11 runs before Jess was unluckily caught and out for 4 runs. It was all finished after 9 overs, with Hollie hitting the winning runs. Inverell won by 9 wickets. Hollie again top scored with 18 runs.
All the girls played well and showed great sportsmanship. Play of the game was Hollie’s bowling figures of 6/2.
We are currently waiting to hear about our next match. We would like to thank Aidan W for umpiring, Mrs Mason’s father-in-law Stuart Mason for scoring and Mr Partridge for driving the bus for us. Thanks also to Coonabarabran, for their competition and for generously offering to play us in Narrabri, when it was their home game.
Under 14s Boys Cricket – Round 2 vs Tenterfield High School
Inverell High School vs Tenterfield High School – Brooks Oval, Friday 31 October
The Inverell High School team also dedicated the match to Ben Austin, with the boys wearing black armbands as a mark of respect.
Winning the toss, Inverell elected to bat first. Lachlan S and Ryan S opened strongly, building a superb partnership to take the score to 1/138 after just 10 overs, before Lachlan was dismissed for a blistering 76 runs.
Ryan continued his fine form, going on to score an outstanding 104 not out, supported by solid contributions from Lachlan K, Dennis H, Riley W and Royce B, helping Inverell post a commanding 5/312 from 30 overs.
In the bowling innings, Riley W struck early to claim the first wicket, backed by Lachlan K and Mitchell R, who each picked up a wicket of their own. A sharp run out from Lachlan S added further pressure on Tenterfield’s batting line-up.
Unfortunately, Tenterfield were forced to concede the match midway through their innings due to circumstances beyond their control.
Our next match will see Inverell High take on Armidale Secondary College in Round 3.
Special thanks to Hollie W and Preston L for their efforts in scoring and umpiring on the day.
