Learning and Teaching

Exploring Ochre Mathematics at St Mary’s

Date: 13th November 2025

Time: 11:25 am – 12:05 pm

Next Thursday, parents and families are invited to join our Mathematics Learning Walk to see what Ochre Mathematics looks like in action at St Mary’s Primary School.

During the session, we’ll visit classrooms to observe:

  • Daily Reviews with mini whiteboards in action
  • Explicit teaching of mathematical concepts
  • How our Classroom Mastery strategies are embedded
  • The Science of Learning principles that underpin effective teaching and student engagement
  •

This is a valuable opportunity to see how our shared practices are supporting student growth in Mathematics and to reflect on how these strategies are being implemented across the school.

You’ll also have a chance to ask questions and share insights with our school leaders during the session.

If you would like to attend, please email Clare Pentreath, our Numeracy Leader of Pedagogy, at cpentreath@smechuca.catholic.edu.au

We look forward to seeing you there as we continue to strengthen our collective practice in Mathematics teaching and learning.

Year 1

In writing, learners engaged with a visual prompt in the shared space, where they were encouraged to express their ideas and interpretations. This interactive activity not only allowed them to express their creativity and critical thinking but also provided an opportunity to offer constructive feedback to one another. Through this process, learners developed communication and collaboration skills while gaining insight into different perspectives. It also served as a meaningful way for them to connect with their peers, fostering a sense of community and belonging in preparation for Year 2.

Year 5

Year 5 Inquiry: “There’s an App for That!

Year 5 learners are now well into their inquiry unit, “There’s an App for That.” They are following the design process to develop their own app that addresses a real problem they have identified in the community.

Learners are currently in the ideate and prototype phases, where they have partnered with a “business” peer to design what their app will look like and how it will work. They are doing this using a wireframe template and designing what each screen will look like, thinking carefully about the app’s t form and function We’ve been so impressed by the creativity and innovation on display and look forward to sharing their projects with families during our upcoming Year 5 “Shark Tank” presentation. Keep an eye on Compass for more details!
