Play is one of the most important parts of development for young children. It is how they learn to problem-solve, imagine, collaborate, and make sense of the world around them. In the busy routine of school life, it can be easy to forget just how valuable those playful moments are.
These last couple of weeks, we made a conscious effort to pause and embrace play as part of our learning day, and it was truly wonderful to see. Students explored their imagination by building with LEGO, creating characters and new worlds, and sharing toys from home. Through play, they practised communication, resilience, creativity, and teamwork. All essential skills for life.
At Cowwarr, we believe that every child deserves opportunities to learn, grow and have fun. These joyful moments remind us that learning comes in many forms, and play has a powerful place.
Over the past two weeks, we have been learning all about non-fiction books and how they help us learn real facts about the world. We explored headings and found out that they tell us what each section is about. We used headings to make predictions and to organise our own writing.
We also learned about captions, the little sentences near pictures that give extra information. We practised finding them in books and then wrote our own captions to match photos and drawings. We even used headings and captions together to share information clearly, just like real authors!
This week, we started learning the difference between facts (true information) and opinions (what someone thinks or feels). We are becoming confident non-fiction readers and writers who are curious, thoughtful, and ready to explore the world through books!
This week we have been learning how to read food labels so we can make healthy choices about what we eat. We practised finding important information like how much sugar is in each serving and talked about why this matters for our bodies and brains.
Working in pairs, we looked closely at real food packages and asked questions like:“Where is the sugar amount?”“Is that per serving or per 100g?”“How many teaspoons would that be?”
To help us really understand, we measured out the sugar and put it in clear bags, then matched it to Traffic Light labels to see if the food (looking at sugar content only) was a healthy choice (green), sometimes food (amber), or a treat (red).
Students loved seeing the sugar amounts for themselves, there were lots of surprised faces and great conversations!

This week, across the school, we explored what it means to be a leader and discovered that everyone has leadership strengths, even if they look different from person to person. We talked about the strengths we already have, like being kind, helping others, speaking up with good ideas, showing resilience, or being a great teammate.
Students chose one leadership strength they are proud of and set a goal for how they will grow that strength this week. It was wonderful to see students recognising their own abilities and showing confidence in who they are becoming as leaders at Cowwarr.
We are building strong, thoughtful leaders, one small step at a time! 🌱✨
