Room 1 Years 3 -6

Melbourne Camp
Our recent Melbourne camp was a fantastic experience for the 5/6 students. The days were busy and full of new experiences, giving the children meaningful time to learn and explore outside the classroom. They were amazed by the city, its tall buildings, and the busy streets, and they handled the unfamiliar and sometimes overwhelming environment extremely well. It was wonderful to see them mixing with students from other schools, making new friends, and supporting each other throughout the trip. The highlight for me as a teacher was their fun energy, general excitement, and awe at everything around them Their enthusiasm and joy were infectious, and it made the camp a truly memorable and special experience for everyone involved.
Learning in Room 1
As we approach the end of the year, we are taking some time to refresh key skills across the curriculum. In writing, we are focusing on conventions such as spelling, punctuation, and grammar. These are areas students sometimes overlook, but they are essential for clear and effective communication. We are encouraging students to take care with their writing, checking their work carefully, and thinking about how their ideas are presented. There is also an emphasis on crafting interesting sentences, using varied vocabulary, and expressing ideas clearly, so that their writing is not only correct but engaging to read.
In reading, we are practising recalling key details and reading with purpose — not just because we have to, but to learn new information and expand our knowledge. Students are also developing the skill of paraphrasing paragraphs and identifying “wow-worthy” facts that make their learning more meaningful.
In maths, fractions and decimals can be a common area of challenge due to their abstract nature. However, students are making great progress, experiencing many “a-ha!” moments as they develop a deeper understanding of these concepts.
Conversations
This term, we have been focusing on helping students distinguish between “talking with” and “talking over” others. By teaching them when it is appropriate to join a conversation and when it is important to listen, we are encouraging more respectful communication in the classroom. This strategy not only helps students develop stronger social skills but also contributes to reducing overall noise levels, creating a calmer learning environment where everyone can be heard and participate effectively.
Working as a 'TEAM'
I just wanted to make a special mention to all our families! This week in particular I have noticed many of you going above and beyond to organise special events such as the Twilight Market, Gardening Club and Halloween Fun. Our school heavily depends on all of you to give an extra hand when needed and it truly makes a difference. So thank you, I see you and appreciate you.
