Focus on Learning

Stage 3-Mrs Hofman and Mrs Meade
Narrative Writing
This term we have been busy learning all about the structure of a narrative through the guidance of our mentor text, Storm Boy. An oldie, but a goodie, Storm Boy has allowed students to clearly see how a writer structures a narrative and the features they can include to help the reader build mental models, add tension and create a progressive plot. Through investigating these aspects and practising their implementation, each student has identified one or two writing goals that they will be aiming to achieve in their novel. These goals range from using correct punctuation, adding detail with figurative language to experimenting with the use of direct and indirect speech.
Through using the writing process (plan, draft, confer, refine, publish), students are in the process of now composing their own narrative, with their goals in mind. We have been amazed at the creativity and writing strengths of our students all term, and are excited to share snippets of their drafts with you below. Once students complete their narratives, they will be ‘published’ in a manner that allows our parents and carers (and possibly wider school community) to read them and appreciate the talented writers we have in Stage 3!
