Science

In the Science Room
Last term students were told that a mystery animal would be arriving in the aquarium Term 2. Students arrived at school to find cherry shrimp had been added to the 'things to spot' list in the science room. The cherry shrimp are VERY good hiders and there are plenty of plants to hide in, so not many students have spotted them yet. To add to the excitement two mussels and a GIANT purple snail have also been added, making the aquarium and interesting place to sit and observe wildlife.
This term students become physicists!
Level 5/6
Level 56 students are focusing on electrical circuits this term. They have enjoyed making basic circuits, adding switches, and lighting LEDs. Some students took it a step further and began creating parallel circuits!
Level 3/4
Level 34 students have begun exploring forces. This week they made balloon rockets using a straw, a balloon and a piece of string. Students enjoyed seeing how their balloon flew and troubleshooting when it did not work. This was a great warm up for our unit this term on rockets and the forces involved in flight!
Level 2
Students will be investigating simple machines this term, linking push and pull forces into everyday occurrences. As students develop their understanding, they will incorporate their knowledge into experiments and the simple machines they build each week.
Level 1
Level 1 students will be exploring their senses this term. Students began the term identifying what the five senses are and what parts of their body they use for those senses. They then explored a wide range of materials and identified what they saw, heard, felt, and smelled. We did not explore taste for safety reasons.
Prep
Prep students are exploring the physics of voluntary and involuntary movement. They have had fun tracing a friend's body, coloring it in, and identifying the parts that move. Students also gained experience in predicting and observing as the explored things that move in the classroom, schoolyard, and outside the schoolyard.
Garden Club
This week in garden club we checked in on the vegetables we previously planted. The kale, which went to seed last year has burst with growth, with many kale seedlings now popping up all over the garden. Lizzo will love munching on fresh kale all winter long. Our regular garden club members all brought a handful of kale seedlings home this week to transplant into their own gardens. The tomato plants continue to deny that winter is coming and have pushed out fresh flowers in hope of fruiting. We will humour it a little while longer and keep these flowers for the bees. Once our first frost destroys their hopes and dreams, then we will remove them to make way for some more winter vegetables.
Until next time, remember to act like a proton and stay positive!
