Grade 1 and 2

It’s hard to believe that we’ve already reached the end of the first term! It has been a big term and much has been achieved at school, individually and collectively, over the last 10 weeks. It's been filled with exciting learning experiences, achievements and a strong sense of community spirit. As we approach the Easter holiday, we hope you all have a very happy Easter, and we look forward to seeing you refreshed and recharged as we continue our journey together in Term 2.
Literacy
This term our Grade 1 and 2 students embarked on an exciting journey of growing their literacy. Our approach was comprehensive and engaging, with a focus on helping students develop essential skills in both reading and writing. This term we concentrated on building fluency through reading a variety of texts, both independently and with support. Students enjoyed reading a variety of texts as a class or small group. They continued to develop their comprehension skills through learning to identify main ideas, making predictions, and answering thick and thin questions. The Grade 1 and 2 students enjoyed working on expanding their vocabulary through exposure to new words and phrases, while also learning to use context clues to decode unfamiliar words. This term, students also enjoyed developing their writing skills though the narrative, factual and persuasive genres.
Students will continue to build on these foundational skills in Term 2, with a focus on enhancing comprehension, vocabulary, writing and reading fluency.
Numeracy
Grade 2 have been enjoying their data unit. We have learnt what data is, learned to record data in tables and graphs and practised asking questions with 4-5 variables so we can collect our own data. We even walked through the steps to create a table and graph in google to display our data digitally.
A highlight was asking "What colour skittles (and how many of each) are in a small skittle packet" and recording our results using tally marks, then graphing the results and making some observations about our data.
Reflections
As the term drew to a close, we took the time to reflect on What we are grateful for and What went well this term.
We hope you have a safe, happy and restful holidays and we look forward to seeing everyone again in Term 2!
