Year 4

Year 4

This week in Year 4, we began our new Mathematics unit on fractions and how to represent them on a number line. To launch the learning in a fun and engaging way, students used fairy bread to explore fractions in real life.

Students cut their fairy bread into equal quarters and used these pieces to help them understand how fractions represent parts of a whole. They then used their quarter pieces to build a quarter's number line, making connections between the pieces they could see and the fraction positions from 0 to 1.

This hands-on activity helped students develop a strong visual understanding of fractions and set a solid foundation for our work with halves, thirds and beyond in the coming weeks.

Kensuke’s Kingdom

Year 4 have been diving into the text Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo. The novel has sparked lots of thoughtful discussions and has inspired much of our English work over the past few weeks.

In writing, the children have been creating persuasive pieces around the question: Is living on an island amazing or dreadful? We’ve seen some brilliant ideas, strong opinions and great use of persuasive language to back up their arguments.

Our shared reading sessions have also focused on building fluency and exploring new vocabulary from the text, which the children have been keen to use in their own work. It’s been fantastic to see such enthusiasm for reading and writing.
