Year One Team News

with Steph and Emma

Hello Year One families,

It’s been a great couple of weeks in Year One. Show and Tell has been a highlight in both classes, with students using this time to share a little more about themselves with their classmates. Please stay across the schedule to assist your child prepare for upcoming weeks.

We have some dedicated readers in Year One. It was wonderful celebrating 20 Nights of Reading with students at our year level assembly last week. The Year One teachers are looking forward to handing out certificates at our assembly next week. Remember to sign each night your child reads. If you need to bulk sign for days or weeks at a time, that’s alright.

We’ve made a start to our Homework Program, in line with the Williamstown Primary Homework Policy. Year One students are not expected to do more than 20 minutes of homework each night with a focus on reading their Little Learners Readers, spelling and maths activities.

The Wellbeing Incursion was a lovely opportunity to focus on how we can keep our body and mind calm through movement and stillness. Speak to your child at home about ways this could present itself both in and outside of school.

Curriculum Focus: Weeks 7 - 8

Reading:  We are continuing the Little Learners Love Literacy program. During this term we will be revising stage 7.1 of the program which focuses on vowel graphemes. Our focus for week 7 will be the phoneme/grapheme ‘oa’ like boat, goat and soap, and our focus for week 8 will be the suffix ‘ing’.

Writing: We are continuing to use the Mentor Text series ‘Pig the Pug’ to inspire sentences that use capital letters, boundary punctuation, letter formation to retell the text.

Numeracy: We are continuing to focus on counting up to and beyond 120.

Inquiry: We are discussing what it means to keep our community, body and mind safe. Students will be working through scenarios where they will identify the safety risk and actions that can be taken to keep themselves and others safe.

Willy Kids/Respectful Relationships: Our Willy Kids focus for weeks 7 and 8 is “Willy Kids Have a Growth Mindset”. Willy Kids have a growth mindset when we never give up and when we bravely try something new.

Warm regards,

The Grade One Team –  Steph Keswick (1K) & Emma Chang-Kum (1C)
