STEAM

Foundation
Foundation students have been exploring the five senses and how we use them to understand the world around us. Through “feely box” investigations, they practised describing what they could feel and using those clues to predict and draw the hidden object.
They have also been identifying the observable features of plants and drawing simple scientific diagrams. Later this term, students will begin classifying plants and animals based on their observable features.
Year 1/2
Year 1/2 students have been learning about the four basic needs for survival: food, water, air and shelter. They designed a settlement on Mars where they were tasked to choose only four settlement modules from a possible six, deciding which were most important for survival and explaining their reasoning.
Students have also explored how different living things meet these needs, with a focus on the redback spider. This has helped them understand that living things survive in different ways depending on their environment.
Year 3/4
Year 3/4 students have been building their collaboration and communication skills through STEAM based games. They have also been learning to distinguish between living, non-living and once living things by identifying their key characteristics.
Next, they will explore life cycles in more depth, learning how living things grow, change and reproduce. Students will compare different life cycles and identify patterns across plants and animals.
Year 5/6
Year 5/6 Students have also been developing teamwork and communication skills through STEAM themed games and collaborative coding activities.
With the school production approaching and the new Performing Arts program, this term’s work has connected technology and the arts. Building on their existing programming knowledge, students have used block coding to remix popular songs. By isolating and reorganising instruments and musical elements, they have explored structure, sequencing and pattern while creating original compositions of their own.
