Team Spirit is Our Competitive Edge

Academy of Mary Immaculate - Term 1 Sport Report

As is the case every year, Term 1 in 2024 was certainly a busy term of sport. The Academy has had students training for Tennis, Swimming, Indoor Cricket, Basketball and Volleyball and we have had representing teams at the CGSAV Swimming and Indoor Cricket events. This has been achieved all whilst finding the time for the 2024 House Swimming Carnival.

CGSAV Events

Tennis:

The Division 2 CGSAV Tennis tournament was unfortunately unable to proceed as planned in 2024 due to the extreme weather conditions that were forecast for Wednesday 28 February. Unfortunately, due to venue availability and the busy sporting schedule of the CGSAV, the event was unable to be rescheduled.

Swimming:

The division 1 CGSAV Swimming carnival was held on Wednesday 13 March at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. The 2024 edition of the event was conducted during school hours, in a change from the regular start time of 5pm. In preparation for the event, the swimming squad members trained at the Carlton Baths swimming pool from 6:30 – 7:30am on Tuesday and Thursday mornings for the month prior to the event, showcasing their commitment. At the conclusion of these training sessions, Swimming coaches and past students Isabella Solano, Sarah Willis and Claudia Cover were all confident in the team selected for the event, who would be lead by the 2024 Swimming Captain Phoebe Gowans.

Unfortunately, due to circumstances out of our control we were unable to provide competitors for several events on the day, and a number of last-minute changes to the team sheet were required. Consequently, there were students who raced in the age group above their own, in an unfamiliar event, or in more events than they were anticipating. These factors, combined with strong opposition, created challenging conditions for our Swimming Squad and we unfortunately finished in 8th position. Please refer to the results table below:

All students who committed to training regularly and raced on the day should be proud of their efforts, as they certainly showcased the Academy values with their actions.

Best:

Mackenzie Bate, Isabel Juricskay, Phoebe Gowans, Lucy Delbridge and Alicia Duvceski

Indoor Cricket:

The 2024 CGSAV Indoor Cricket tournament was held at the Box Hill Action Indoor Sports Centre on Monday 25 March. The Academy had a representing team in the Junior, Intermediate and Senior divisions of the competition.

Juniors

Our Junior Indoor cricket team travelled to Box Hill for the Interschool competition. We started with a close loss in our first game against CLC, where we fell 12 runs short. Our next game saw us tie with Mount Saint Joseph’s 67 runs each in a thrilling game where we got 3 runs off the last ball to tie. Our third game saw us out played by eventual winners Mater Christi, who bowled very well against us. In our last game we couldn’t afford to lose if we wanted to play finals and in another thrilling finish, we scored 3 runs off the last ball to tie the game and denied Avila a spot in the Semi finals. In our semi final match we bowled very well to restrict Mount Saint Joseph’s to 65 but we came up short by 23 runs in the chase.

Best players for the Junior team were Freya McGlone, Emma Hutchison and Zimim Zhang.

Intermediates

The Intermediate Indoor Cricket team, coached by Ms. Joanne Gardner were unfortunately unable to progress to the Semi Final stage of the competition and ultimately found the opposition too challenging. The Intermediate Team consisted of Year 9 students, therefore is a base for them to build from when they face the division again as Year 10s in 2025. Please refer to the results table below:

Seniors

The Senior Indoor Cricket Team were able to win two group stage matches and successfully progress to the Semi Final stage of the competition. Unfortunately, they suffered a narrow loss in their Semi Final match and they were knocked out of the competition. Please refer to the results table below:

House Swimming Carnival

The 2024 Academy House Swimming Carnival was held on Tuesday 5 March at the Northcote Aquatic Centre. In 2023 Sherlock were able to win both the House Swimming and House Athletics carnivals. However, in 2024, Frayne lead by year 12 captain, Saskia Viola and House Advisor, Mr. Angelo De Cata were able to break Sherlock’s undefeated run and claim the overall prize. This was also Frayne’s first swimming carnival victory in a number of years, so we congratulate them on their efforts.

Please find the overall results below:

Goold – 555 Points

McAuley – 633 Points

Sherlock – 735 Points

We would also like to congratulate the following students who were recognised with individual awards as the best performers within their age group:

The Academy Community would like to extend our congratulations to Year 11 Student Jessica Fragomeni on her selection in the Under 16 Vic Metro team. Jessica was selected due to her performances for the Northern Knights in the Coates Talent League and her performance in the Under 16 State Trial Game. Jessica’s selection had her play in the following matches:
