Poisonous Mushrooms

Autumn brings many things: colder weather, changing leaves...and mushrooms.

Australia has many types of mushrooms growing in the wild. Some of these are edible. But there are many that are poisonous, even deadly. Symptoms include severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.

It is recommended you only eat mushrooms bought from the supermarket, greengrocer or other reputable source. It is important that any wild mushrooms are left in the wild.

There is no at home test available to make sure the mushrooms you find are safe to eat. If you or your child has eaten a poisonous mushroom you should urgently attend an emergency room and take any remaining mushroom with you for identification purposes.

If you find any mushrooms in your home gardens make sure they are removed. Ensure you are wearing gloves and carefully place in a bag and dispose of them in a closed rubbish bin.
