Working in Partnership to embed learning

Students will often learn at different rates. This difference in learning can be a result of a number of factors, one of which can be the impact of what we call the “forgetting curve”. 

 

This is something students or even adults encounter when they have learned a new skill and feel as though they “know it”, however if we don’t use the skill for a while we can lose the information and sometimes even need to relearn it.  

 

The key to students not losing their learning is ongoing repeated practice at the time of learning and later in intervals every few weeks. This supports students to make stronger connections in their brains that allow them to find and apply the skill automatically at a later date. 

 

This ongoing practice is only a success if schools and families work together in partnership to ensure all students have repeated, ongoing practice of the skills learned at school. To support families to embed learning, our teachers add focused learning activities to our Home Learning site each week. These include opportunities to embed what students have been learning in class, as well as some challenges to help them apply the skills to new problems.  

 

 

It can sometimes be difficult to engage students in Home Learning after a long day at school, but it is important that families help their children to establish a daily routine that requires them to practise their reading, word work and basic maths skills. Working together with your child each night can make a big difference and can help them build the organisational skills they will continue to need through life.
