The Curious Corner is a new addition to our school and program in 2024, and is utilised by all Junior School students from Prep - Grade 2. The Curious Corner is designed to enhance our students' learning in two key areas - Inquiry and Social Development.
Inquiry
Every term, the Curious Corner changes to align with that term's current Inquiry Unit. This term, the entire school is inquiring into Geography. In Prep, the focus is on the different places in our community, the purpose behind these places, and our own connection to the different places in our community. To support students' understanding about these ideas, the Curious Corner has been set up with lots of different places in our community (see photos above) and students will have the opportunity to explore these through play-based and hands on experiences. The Junior School Inquiry focuses more closely on the things in our community that are constructed (man-made) vs natural. These ideas will be explored through the Construction Zone and natural Lysterfield Lake set up in the Curious Corner.
Social Development
The Curious Corner is also a unique space which provides our students with the opportunity to practise the social skills they learn through the Friendology Program in an environment that is safe and supported by the Junior School teachers. Students learn about the theory of friendship and social skills in the classroom, and through their play in the Curious Corner, they can actively practise those skills and strategies. Teachers use this time to roam the space and provide students with 'in the moment' feedback about their choices in play. Through the Curious Corner, we provide students with opportunities to practise communicating, turn taking, negotiating, compromising, sharing, leading play, and advocating for their own ideas and opinions, with the support and scaffolding of our wonderful teachers.
The Curious Corner is an amazing space for learning about the world around us, but also learning more about ourselves and how we can safely and happily function in our highly social world.
