Grade 3

It’s hard to believe we’re already nearing the end of Term 2. It has been an action-packed term full of hands-on learning, exciting discoveries and creative thinking. Students have participated in swimming, cross country, National Reconciliation Week and National Simultaneous Storytime, just to name a few highlights. We also had our excursion to Old Gippstown Heritage Park this week!
English
Students have been focusing on their reading comprehension skills. Through a variety of reading activities, students have practised answering questions about texts and using evidence to support their thinking.
Students identified the purpose and features of procedural texts and created their own procedure, including materials lists, labelled diagrams and sequenced steps. In narrative writing, students explored how stories are structured to entertain readers. They followed the writing process by brainstorming, planning, drafting, revising and editing their work.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, we have continued our Daily Maths routine, which encourages students to use mental computation strategies to solve problems. Students have also been exploring graphs and data by creating surveys about a new playground and constructing bar graphs to represent their findings.
Students enjoyed designing their own playgrounds from a bird’s-eye view while incorporating symmetry into their designs. They also used measuring equipment, such as rulers, to measure objects around the classroom.
Integrated Studies
Students have participated in our Change unit, where they explored how life has changed over time. They compared old-fashioned games with the games they play today, experimenting with different activities while identifying similarities and differences.
This week, students stepped back in time with an exciting excursion to Old Gippstown Heritage Park, where they experienced life as it was from the 1800s to the early 1900s. Through hands-on activities and interactive demonstrations, students discovered how early settlers lived, learned, worked and played in a unique heritage village setting.
