Year 3/4

Mathematics – Transformations in 2D Shapes (Stage 2)
In Mathematics this term, students are learning about 2D shapes and transformations. They are exploring how shapes can change position and orientation through different types of movement, including rotation, reflection and translation.
Students are developing their understanding of how shapes can be turned, flipped and slid while still maintaining their size and properties. Through hands-on activities, drawing tasks and investigations, students are learning to identify and describe these transformations using correct mathematical language.
We encourage families to discuss shapes and movements in everyday life at home. Students may enjoy finding examples of reflections, rotations or translations in signs, patterns, artwork or objects around them.
NSW Mathematics K–10 Syllabus – Stage 2 Outcome: MA2-2SP-01 – Represents and describes the positions of objects in two-dimensional space, and combines and splits shapes in informal and formal ways.
