Exploring the Ancient Past: K/1/2 History

This term, our K/1/2 students have embarked on an exciting journey into the ancient past! We have been actively investigating the rich history, fascinating myths, and legendary stories of ancient peoples, places, and cultures - with a special focus on Ancient Greece and Rome.

Throughout the first half of the term, students have engaged in a variety of hands-on historical inquiries, including:

  • Identifying and Comparing Artifacts: Students have been learning to look closely at ancient objects from Greece and Rome, comparing their features and discussing their possible uses. We even did an archeological dig.
  • Exploring Ancient Architecture: We have been identifying and describing remarkable designs, sites, and structures from ancient times that still endure today, such as the iconic Parthenon and the grand Colosseum. If you get to Canberra soon, take your children past the National Library to show them how it was influenced by the Parthenon.
  • Mapping History: Using maps, globes, and images, the children have been locating the real-world places featured in the ancient stories and myths we've shared in class.

The students were particularly captivated by the Colosseum! While investigating ancient paintings and mosaics, they were amazed to discover the extraordinary types of animals that were brought there to be displayed and to fight gladiators. In our writing and drawing, we captured what it might have been like to be there!
