Welcome to learning with 6A!

To begin our term, we are currently having a look at chemicals through our inquiry question "How do our choices with chemical use impact the world around us?”.

Within this learning, we have developed our understanding of what a chemical is as well as how they are used in our day-to-day life. Recently we had an incursion, where students gained an understanding of how plastics can be recycled and used rather than disposed of. When reflecting on this, the following highlights were given:

Albert – Making a yo-yo from melted down milk bottle caps, that got put through a machine and fed into moulds of a yoyo.

Mindula – It was fun and exciting because we got to make things with our hands.

When learning about everyday chemical usages, we had an opportunity to how they have changed over time. Our investigation lead us to explore compounds such as Lead paint, Asbestos, Non-stick pans, Mercury, Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs)  as well as Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs). When reflecting on what they found out, the following

Veer – Asbestos was used in the past because it was cheap and really good at not catching fire, but over time we learned that when it breaks up it can cause lots of illnesses which are harmful.

Nishita – Lead paint stopped being used and got banned because of how toxic it was to humans, this happened over several years before the year 2000.
